Basel Week HK ’18 / Showing: Yoshitomo Nara – “Ceramic Works and…” @ Pace Gallery

A couple days ago, during Basel Week Hong Kong, Pace Gallery inaugurated its second gallery in Hong Kong (12/F H Queen’s 80 Queen’s Road Central) with an exhibition by Yoshitomo Nara entitled Ceramic Works and… As the title suggests, the center of the new space was dominated by ceramic head sculptures from the Japanese artist, three dimensional representations of his instantly recognizable anime-inspired portraits. Rounding out the show were drawing and paintings from Nara on the surrounding walls. Discuss Yoshitomo Nara here. Photo credit: @SashaBogojev.

Previews: Mel Kadel – “Thought Pattern” @ Subliminal Projects

On April 7th, Subliminal Projects will be presenting all new works from Mel Kadel in a show entitled Thought Pattern. Planning for an immersive experience, the locally-based artist has prepared more than 100 new works on paper, which will on display along with installations, murals, and hand-painted Modernica furniture. Painting on her trusty coffee stained paper while utilizing her signature characters, familiar patterns, and floral motifs, Kadel explores – the “internal struggle, resolve, and strength one achieves while weaving through patterns of thought about the past, […]

Basel Week HK ’18 / Showing: Art Basel (Part 1)

Today, the 29th of March, the Convention & Exhibition Centre will be once again opening its doors for the annual edition of Art Basel Hong Kong. We’ve in the city for few days already and had the chance to look at the both floors of the fair during the private viewing days and capture a glimpse of the glamour, beauty and madness that is taking place. Featuring 248 premiere galleries from 32 countries, half of them having exhibition spaces in Asia and the Asia-Pacific, Art Basel […]

Streets: Mark Jenkins x CALM – “Project 84” (London)

Starting a few days ago, passerbys of some of London’s ITV buildings were treated to an unsettling sight if their eyes lifted to the sky. What appeared to be 84 men, standing on the edge the rooftops as if about to jump, were installed by Mark Jenkins (interviewed) and collaborator Sandra Fernandez as part of a campaign being run by the Campaign against Living Miserably, or CALM. Dovetailing nicely with the  American street artist’s habit of leaving his signature packing tape works in the public arena for people […]

Basel Week HK ’18: Mike Lee – “Quality Time” @ Art Central // Over The Influence

One of our personal favorites from this year’s Art Central was the solo showcase by Mike Lee at the Over The Influence’s booth. Simultaneously showing the NY-based artist’s Hong Kong debut along with a solo show by Tadashi Kawamata in their local space, the gallery presented a sold out exhibition at the fair that included some of the largest pieces Lee has ever produced. Titled collectively Quality Time, the oils on canvas and panel continue the American artist’s efforts to portray his vision of happiness and good […]

Upcoming: Aakash Nihalani – “Tilt” @ Wunderkammern (Milan)

Returning to work with Wunderkammern after a showing in their Rome location (covered) back in 2014, Aakash Nihalani (interviewed) is opening his latest solo tonight with the gallery’s space in Milan. Entitled Tilt, the new body of work will include a site-specific installation and a series of small-format works created with ink and paint on paper. Playing with geometric shapes and optical illusion-like effects, the American artist continues to refine the skills he acquired while working with just a roll of tape while making art in the […]

Basel Week HK ’18 / Recap: Art Central

On the 27th of April, the Art Central fair in Hong Kong opened its door to the public, showcasing the works selected by 100 leading international galleries, 75% of which hail from the Asia Pacific. With 30 of these galleries having their debut turn at this fair, the event was bound to present some fresh art by up-and-coming, as well as some well established names. The fact that the majority of presenting galleries are based in Asia and are showing local artists could definitely be noticed […]

Basel Week HK ’18 / Openings: KAWS @ Galerie Perrotin

After a successful opening (covered) in Tokyo at Perrotin last week, KAWS dropped the second verse of his tour of Asia with a showing at the gallery’s Hong Kong location. The pieces on display played out like part two of a cohesive body of work featuring abstract hints of the beloved cartoon and pop culture characters that the Brooklyn-based artist continues to be fascinated with. Rounding out the exhibition timed to coincide with Basel Week Hong Kong was a large scale bronze version of his recently released pink […]

Basel Week HK ’18 / Openings: Osgemeos – “Deja Vu” @ Lehmann Maupin

One of the highlights of Basel Week Hong Kong for local fans and out of town visiting collectors was a solo from Osgemeos at Lehmann Maupin. Entitled Déjà Vu, the vibrant new body of work features the surreal imagery from the twins that we have grown to love including influences from the golden age of hip hop and their life as vandals. Rounding out the exhibition was a sound installation featuring modified speakers painted to resemble faces and some imaginative use of materials including sequins, cotton balls, […]
