Streets: Kenny Scharf (Philadelphia)

After collaborating with Liu Bolin in New York for the Chinese artist’s Hiding In New York series of works in front of his Bowery & Houston mural, street legend Kenny Scharf (interviewed) headed over to the City of Brotherly Love for his next project. Painting a crescendo of his creatures on the side of tall building, Scharf used his spray cans, scaffolding, and even an umbrella hat in completing this large Philly mural in just four days. The week started off well for AM with a new piece by street artist Mobstr making an appearance on Bethnel Green Road. This massive white pasteup can be seen from a distance, causing anyone who passes to stop in their tracks. Titled Visual Pollution, the letters have been cut out so the original advert can be seen through. Thursday evening, 111 Minna in San Francisco hosted the opening for Nathan Ota and Risk’s collaborative exhibition, That Was Then, This Is Now. The two respected graffiti artists first collaborated over 25 years in high school, but had lost contact ever since. It was not until last year, when Greg Simkins and Jeff Soto worked on murals with Risk (and knew about the two’s previous history), that it was suggested that they reconnect again. AM recently attended the opening of Brett Amory’s (interviewed) latest NY solo Dark Light (previewed) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. This new series of paintings is a departure from Brett’s daytime series as the subjects are based in the still of night. However, Brett transitions his subjects and urban environments effortlessly into the emptiness of nocturnal darkness. As Andrew Hem (interviewed) got ready for his show opening next weekend at LeBasse Projects in Culver City, he took time to throw up this mural in the neighborhood, Washington and National to be exact. This large piece featuring Andrew’s colorful characters seen in many of his paintings is in the same area where Herakut and Case worked on walls when they were in town (also arranged by Warren Brand). A couple weeks ago, AM caught the opening of Jeremy Fish’s (featured) exhibition at the Joshua Liner Gallery. The show Listen and Learn showcased not only the bold and complex characters that make up Jeremy’s cartoon-like style, but also the stories of multiple angles told from the viewpoints of different people from all walks of life. The Obamas, who already have a fantastic art collection on display in the White House (including a Ben Eine piece), will be adding another great piece to their living quarters. Globetrotting street phenomenon ROA has touched down in Berlin and is currently setting up his show at Skalitzers. Not only will fans in Germany be treated to complex installations and ingenius moving-part paintings, the Belgium-based artist will be releasing his first book – ROA: An Introduction To Animal Representation by Mammal Press.
