Ryan McGinness showed a darker side to his work on Saturday night, when the third installment of his Women: The Blacklight Paintings series opened at The Standard Hotel’s Purple Lounge in West Hollywood. As with the events at Art Basel Miami last year (covered) and in New York early this year (covered), his luminescent deconstructions of the female form graced the walls of the establishment while similarly painted dancers cavorted about the room. Last Thursday, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York was the site of French-born and Barcelona-based Miss Van’s new body of work. One of the pioneers for women street artists in a male dominated genre, the delicate yet strong characters that she paints have always made an impression with their uninhibited sexuality and freedom of expression. Just this past Friday night, Ryan McGinness started to hit his stride as he continued on to the middle part of his tour of LA. The special book signing, barbecue, exhibition of sketches, and lecture all rolled into one was held at Giant Robot 2 on Sawtelle street. Last weekend, the talented Kent Williams presented his new body of work entitled Convergence at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles. His set of oil paintings, some large scale, displayed a keen sense of the human form and bring to mind classical live painting but with a contemporary twist. Openings: John Chamberlain @ Pace Gallery

We recently went by Pace Gallery to see sculptor John Chamberlain’s 13th and final solo with the gallery (he recently left to become represented by Gagosian). Chamberlain has made his 50-year career by creating large-scale painted metal sculptures—typically out of car parts—which bring to mind three-dimensional abstract expressionist paintings. His current exhibition with Pace consists of more than a dozen such sculptures from the 1980s through the 2000s and is showing through July 1. Take a look at images from the show, after the jump.

A couple weekends ago when AM attended the opening of Nate Frizzell’s solo show in Chinatown, we also stopped by the adjacent POVevolving Gallery to check out Derek Albeck’s newest work. The show entitled Mysterious Strangers featured a mix of work including some unique hard to describe photographic transfers rendered in powdered graphite as well as large two panel self-portrait. San Francisco, last weekend, hosted a slew of fine art fairs around the city. One noteworthy fair was the inaugural edition of ArtPadSF (held at the legendary Phoenix Hotel in the Tenderloin), which focused mainly on Bay Area galleries that feature contemporary and emerging art. Each room of the hotel featured a different gallery’s display and the lounge played host to panel discussions on art.
