Openings: Ai Weiwei @ Lisson Gallery

On Thursday 12 May, AM attended the opening of the Ai Weiwei exhibition at Lisson Gallery (previewed), spread across both of its spaces on Bell Street in West London. The wide selection of work on display — produced over the last six years and agreed with the artist at the beginning of 2011 — does well to illustrate the playful, evocative and provocative nature of the Ai’s output. Given the show’s breadth and overall strength, we’re sticking our neck out and calling it a must-see. […]

Focus: Street Market – Barry McGee, Steve Powers, Todd James – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

As part of the MoCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition (covered), Todd James (aka REAS), Barry McGee (aka Ray Fong, Lydia Fong, Robert Pimple, Twist) and Steve Powers (aka ESPO) reunited to re-envision their legendary 2000 Street Market installation at Deitch Projects, which itself was a recreation of the trio’s Indelible Market at the Philadelphia ICA earlier that year. Although the installation is always different, the idea remains the same: an urban environment—complete with stores, streets and all—that reflects the artists’ idea of a hyper-real […]

Teaser: Zhang Huan – “49 Days” @ Blum & Poe

Two big firsts are happening with artist Zhang Huan.  First, he is going to show solo at Culver City’s Blum & Poe for the first time.  Secondly, this will also be his first ever one-man exhibition in Los Angeles.  One of China’s preeminent artists today, Huan has worked in many different forms of art and media, including performance-based work, large-scale commissioned sculptures, painting and sculpture using incense ash, and has even reinterpreted an opera.  This time, the artist will be exhibiting brick sculptures and will […]

Openings: Jen Stark & Maya Hayuk – “Double Rainbow Rainbow” @ Show & Tell Gallery

Over the weekend, Shows & Tell Gallery in Toronto opened a two person exhibition, Double Rainbow Rainbow (previewed), a smart curatorial pairing of two woman that each play with color in distinct and effective ways. Known for her kaleidoscopic cut paper sculptures, Jen Stark was easily the standout with a trio of her signature mixed-media works meticulously crafted by hand, along with a series of her playful felt tip pen drawings. With this new body of sculptural work, the Miami-based artist mixed things up a […]

Openings: Clayton Brothers – “Inside Out” @ Pasadena Museum of California Art

A couple of nights ago, we headed over to the Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA) to check out two show openings.  One was Street Cred (covered), and the other was Inside Out from the renowned Clayton Brothers (featured). If you remember, last September, Christian and Rob presented an exhibition with the same title at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA), so this is the second showing for this retrospective body of work. We didn’t have the opportunity to attend that show in Wisconsin, but […]

Interviews: Kenny Scharf @ Levis Film Workshop – “Meet the Artists” series (MOCA)

Last Sunday, AM attended the screening and Q+A for Kenny Scharf: More, Newer, Better, Nower, Funner, as part of a series of short films at the Levis Film Workshop, each based on an artist in the Art in the Streets exhibition. The footage includes Scharf on day and night time spray painting excursions, as well the creation of his installation for the historic MOCA show. The short film is directed by Nathan Meier and Kenny’s daughter, Malia Scharf, who are collaborating on a feature length documentary […]

Openings: Barbara Kruger @ L&M Arts, Los Angeles

The last time Barbara Kruger had a solo exhibition in Los Angeles, it was for the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in 1999.  Thanks to L&M Arts in Venice, Angelenos are once again able to immerse themselves in a one-woman show filled with her recent work. Consisting of a multi-channel video installation running 13 minutes, a room “wrap”, exterior wall projection, and room filled with smaller-sized text pieces on panel, the legendary conceptual artist provided a multitude of options to receive her messages and ideas.  […]

Openings: “Street Cred” @ Pasadena Museum of California Art

Last night in Pasadena, the art and influence of graffiti in Los Angeles was on full display as Street Cred at the Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA) opened its doors to a group of artists ranging in genres from letter-based legends like SABER, RISK, and RETNA (who also painted the facade of the museum), to so called post-graffiti abstract expressionism by painters like Augustine Kofie (whose mural with El Mac was put up in conjunction with the show) and Push, to fine artists such […]

Openings: Nate Frizzell – “To Become Myself” @ LeBasse Projects (Chinatown)

Taking a cue from our primitive ancestors, Nate Frizzell (interviewed) went old school by employing man’s oldest writing utensil with his newest body of work. Often, simplicity is best, if not at least a nice change of pace from an artist’s modus operandi. Such was the case in Chinatown last night with To Become Myself (previewed), a series of charcoal works on paper that exhibited a softer side to the Los Angeles artist’s visual language. Marking Nate’s third consecutive sold-out show with LeBasse Projects, the […]
