Aiko & Tomokazu Matsuyama – “Edo Pop” @ Japan Society

New York’s Japan Society recently hosted an exhibition looking at the graphic impact of Japanese prints on art in the contemporary age. Entitled Edo Pop, this showcase playfully juxtaposed traditional ukiyo-e woodblock prints from such masters as Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige with current New York contemporary artists, such as Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) and Aiko. Starting from the first inklings of the project back in October, Louis Vuitton seemed to be tapping into the the street art game to further their long line of artist collaborations. After their the initial foray in this direction, the iconic fashion house’s project has expanded to include three artists so far – Aiko, Os Gemeos, and RETNA. This past weekend New York City got a dose of the Hello Kitty treatment from Sanrio and a load of talented artists. Earlier this evening, AM stopped by Wynwood Walls to check out the opening of the Time Evaporates, Emotion Elevates group exhibition inside the new Nicewalk Gallery space. The show featured backlit lenticular paintings (or photos) alongside some original works from selected artists (Aiko, Ron English, Swoon, How & Nosm, Logan Hicks, Kenny Scharf, Futura) who have painted murals at the complex. On Saturday night, the Known Gallery in Los Angeles hosted a private release party for Hello Kitty, Hello Art!, a book compiling artwork inspired by Sanrio characters. Streets: Aiko Mural on Bowery & Houston (Part II)

Last week, we brought you the start of Aiko’s work on New York’s renowned Bowery & Houston mural location. Working through the course of several days the artist took her time to stencil and paint sections of the wall. This past weekend, New York’s Cotton Candy Machine hosted their second annual “tiny” art showcase entitled Tiny Trifecta.
