Openings: “District La Brea” Group Exhibition @ MK2 Projects

Last weekend, MK2 Projects, the special exhibition space of Merry Karnowsky in Los Angeles, hosted a group showing from Shepard Fairey, Deedee Cheriel, Mercedes Helnwein, Mark Whalen / Kill Pixie, Mel Kadel, Travis Millard, Matt Small, Samuel Lowder (FrePrs), Lezley Saar, Aiko Nakagawa, Todd Carpenter and Steven R. Teaser: “District La Brea” Group Exhibition @ MK2 Projects

Basel Week Miami ’11: Slap Happy @ Wynwood Walls

This year during Art Basel Miami, DB Burkeman—who brought us Stickers: Stuck Up Piece of Crap (covered) and The Sticker Wall (covered)—will be presenting Slap Happy at Wynwood Walls (covered). For the project, DB and Paul Weston invited 75 artists and designers from around the globe to create a same-sized black and white sticker. Releases: Aiko – “Lady Butterfly” Sculpture (Black)

If you remember, we previously reported on the limited edition and intricate Lady Butterfly sculpture (produced by Tomenosuke Sho-ten) from Aiko Nakagawa earlier this year. The initial silver colorway easily sold out on Valentine’s Day, but the newest black version (limited to 10 each) was released just hours ago 1.00pm (JST) on September 16th and retailed for $550 here. Preview: AIKO – “Unstoppable Waves” @ Andenken Gallery

Andenken Gallery, now located in Amsterdam, last exhibited AIKO’s work when she was a member of Faile and the space was located in Denver.  Six years later, the gallery is now across the world in Amsterdam and AIKO is one of the most successful female artists in the street art genre.  Opening on July 9, This will be AIKO’s first ever European solo show and will feature new signature stenciled paintings by the artist. Releases: Aiko – “Lady Butterfly” Sculpture

Aiko Nakagawa just reported yesterday that her Lady Butterfly sculpture is nearing completion.  The complex piece produced by Tomenosuke Sho-ten requires assemblage of 13 little components and features elements of her iconic imagery. Inspired by her love for the Baroque sculptures she saw in Rome, Aiko describes her creation as “a fairy of the street… comes in the night and draws stories of love and romance with her spray paint.” Scheduled for release on Valentine’s Day, the limited figure will eventually be painted in five […]
