Armory Week ’12: Armory Art Show – First Look (Part I)

Yesterday, AM attended the private viewing of the Armory Art Show which officially kicked off a crazy week of art in New York. Similar to Basel Miami’s first look, many of the art world’s notable collectors queued up patiently for the clock to strike noon so they could pounce on their favorites at the the fair’s many quality galleries. It took us hours to run through and scan the booths to bring you a selection of images. Check it out after the jump.

As you must have realized from the article on our studio visit with Aakash Nihalani that we published yesterday, Armory Week is just around the corner. Running from March 8th to 11th, the preeminent New York art fair (along with satellites) will be keeping AM busy in the upcoming days. Preview: Futura for Art Wynwood

Not wasting time after his solo showing (covered) in Paris last month, graffiti legend Futura headed over to Miami for Art Wynwood to work on his latest project. At this year’s Art Los Angeles Contemporary, visitors were greeted at the fair’s entrance with Judy Chicago’s dazzling performance installation, Sublime Environment. As part of Pacific Standard Time’s Performance and Public Art Festival, the large scale installation was created with 25 tons of dry ice, with help from the Silverlake non-profit, Materials & Applications, and a group of 40 volunteers. Over the weekend, the Affordable Art Fair opened Los Angeles including a booth for one of the galleries exhibiting work – Thinkspace Gallery. On Tuesday, AM attended the opening of London Art Fair, an event that focuses on modern British and contemporary art, held at the Business Design Centre in Islington. In terms of overall presentation, the most attractive and cohesive booth for us this year is by London’s Hazlitt Holland-Hibbert, featuring works by Bridget Riley, Anthony Caro and Kenneth Armitage.
