Art Focus: Laurent Craste

For this weekend’s Art Focus feature, we wanted to point you to the work of Laurent Craste. The French sculptor creates these ornate porcelain pieces that would be classic works except that he literally “throws a wrench in things” by having various items like baseball bats, axes, knives, nails and more embedded in them. By utilizing the typical decorative item as an indicator for social status, instruments of political power, and demonstrations of ostentatious luxury, the Montreal-based artist is able to make a statement with […]

Art Focus: Tania Blanco

This weekend’s Art Focus is on Spanish artist Tania Blanco and her series of Sleep-Drunk Vademecum paintings. The intriguing set of rounded acrylic on wood pieces are her treatise on science and the human condition featuring medical instruments, high precision technology, scientific devices, anatomical models, and clandestine laboratories as her subjects. Some of what she paints is recognizable while some look to be from somewhere in the future and appear to be inspired by a quote from Jean Baudrillard from his doctoral thesis – The […]

Art Focus: Brad Kunkle

For this week’s Art Focus, we turn our attention to New York-based painter Brad Kunkle. We were first introduced to his skills during the opening of the Martin Wittfooth curated Dark Water show (covered) in Los Angeles. What is striking about his work is his incorporation of silver and gold leaf into his oil paintings, which imbues them with an added depth and allows for a play with light and angles. He feels that the relationship between the leaf, figures, and environments in his work is […]

Art Focus: Stephanie Pierce

After a little hiatus, our Art Focus is back this week and our artist is Stephanie Pierce. She currently lives and teaches in Fayetteville, Arkansas and creates these ethereal oil on linen and canvas paintings that play with light, abstraction, and fragments of color. With imagery based mainly on a room and its contents, the feeling of flux and transitory nature achieved in her work is interesting considering the simple nature of her subjects. See more work and her artist statement after the jump…

Art Focus: Shawn Huckins

An interesting juxtaposition of old masters like imagery and modern text abbreviation  – this series of paintings from Shawn Huckins is our Art Focus for the week. The premise for this particular set of works is Huckins’ view of the history of the United States as bookended by two revolutions – one being political in the 18th century and the other being technological in the 21st century. He combines both of these ideas into each piece melding painting and portraiture from the earlier revolutionary period […]

Art Focus: Claire Streetart

We hope you all enjoyed your Valentine’s Day today. To cap things off, we bring you a special mid-week Art Focus that we have been saving for the occasion. Claire Streeart is a Parisian street artist who work focuses on life-size couples kissing, hugging, and showing their affections. No surprise here as Paris is the City of Love. More photos after the jump…

Art Focus: Boa Mistura

Boa Mistura or “Good Mixture” is made up of five Spanish artists, Arkoh, Derko, Pahg, Purone and Rdick, who have developed their work in different fields including graffiti and mural painting, to graphic design and illustration. Collectively, they meld their talents together for various endeavors like this recent Participative Urban Art project in Vila Brâsilandia, one of the favelas in São Paulo. The intervention, with its 3D illusionary effect, focuses on “vecos” and “vielas” – winding streets that form as connections for the internal life […]

Art Focus: Peter Fuss

For our Art Focus this week, we turn our attention to Polish street artist Peter Fuss. In particular, we like his series of billboard takeovers and his take on social-political issues. No topic seems to be off-limit including the high-priced world of contemporary art, religion, turmoil in the Middle East, as well as more sardonic and witty items. Take a look at more examples of his work after the jump…

Art Focus: Ethan Murrow

Boston-based Ethan Murrow works in large-scale graphite drawings and is the subject of our Art Focus for this week. The full time Graduate and Undergraduate Faculty in Painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Beantown bases his imagery on collaborative work with his wife, where she films, photographs and directs him in performances.  In fact, his short film Dust was an official selection of the 2008 New York Film Festival. Murrow has an upcoming show in April at the Obsolete Gallery […]

Art Focus / Videos: Riusuke Fukahori

Riusuke Fukahori and his amazing three-dimensional paintings have been selected as our Art Focus this week. With incredible patience and with layer by layer of paint and poured resin, Fukahori builds up these incredible life-like creations of his favorite subject – goldfish. When the 3D pieces are placed in buckets and tubs, the illusion is complete. The Japanese painter just closed an exhibition at ICN Gallery in London and you can check out more photos here. Take a look at the video detailing his process as […]
