Art Focus: David MacDowell – “Appetite For Veruca”

After witnessing David MacDowell’s wit and humor as well his acrylic skills firsthand at Thinkspace a short while back, we fast became fans of his work. But, his ballsy take on Robert Williams‘ classic “Appetite For Destruction” at the Crazy4Cult 3D show really blew our mind. Notice the seamless blending of the world of Willy Wonka with arguably one of the most famous paintings of lowbrow art culture. See Williams’ original painting after the jump as well as hear in MacDowell’s own words how he […]

New Artist Focus: Tristram Lansdowne

The upcoming summer group show (teased/previewed) at Joshua Liner Gallery is packed with heavyweight artists with whom frequent AM readers will already be familiar, such as Dave Kinsey, Joe Sorren and Greg Simkins (interviewed). However, the show will likely be many people’s introduction to several up-and-coming young artists. One of those whom we are particularly interested in is Canadian painter Tristram Lansdowne. More after the jump…

Art Focus: Alexandros Vasmoulakis

AM is a big fan of Alexandros Vasmoulakis. Although he currently resides in Berlin, the young Greek artist dominates the urban skyline of his hometown Athens with enormous murals on the city’s high rise buildings. We love the blend of street and pop surrealist qualities in Alexandros’ work and his sharp use of color to create a sensation of movement. The scale on which he works and his ability to incorporate his pieces into their environment is very impressive. More images after the jump…

Art Focus: Robert Longo

We recently came across the mind blowingly detailed charcoal work of Robert Longo which led us to do a little digging to see what’s going on with this talented and renowned artist. His twenty year retrospective (1979-2009) show at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice, France just opened last month and will be showing until the end of November.  Not sure exactly which works were included but our vote would have been for some of his newest work this year from the YingXiong (Heroes) series, an example […]

Art Focus: Michael Jackson – An Icon in Art

Andy Warhol – Michael Jackson (1984) As perhaps one of the most famous men alive during the last quarter of the 20th century and beyond, Michael Jackson transcended just music.  He became a part of our culture at large and became a figure in visual arts.  While there will be much more art coming soon in memorial of his life and as the countless Michael Jackson news, tributes and articles continue to inundate the media, let’s take a look back at some of those most […]

Art Focus: Thomas Doyle x New York Times Magazine

An artist we recently fell in love with at the Culver City Artwalk, Thomas Doyle, was commissioned by the New York Times Magazine to create a sculpture for their “Infrastructure” issue. This issue, which hits newsstands today, focuses on architecture, a perfect fit for half of what Doyle does so well – create small scale replicas of different structures and buildings placed in terrariums. The other half of what he does well is what sets him apart from ordinary diorama makers – capturing human emotion […]

Art Focus: Li Xiaofeng

Just as sculptor Jin Young Yu (interviewed), Wang Zhi Jie and Ayako Rokkaku caught our eye at Art Basel Miami last year, the recent Art Hong Kong fair introduced us to the stunning porcelain dress of Beijing artist Li Xiaofeng. Xiaofeng creates clothing from porcelain fragments from the Ming, Qing and Song dynasties and even more amazing are that they are wearable. Take a closer look after the jump…
