Openings: “Postermat” @ The Hole Gallery

AM recently attended The Hole Gallery’s latest show Postermat. The group exhibition was a little different than the typical group show because they went all retro with it. Imagine going back to your childhood and rummaging through mall shops for your favorite posters of sports, rockbands, singers or even comic books – almost everyone had a cheap but cool poster that was maybe mass produced, but meant the world to us. In the same spirit, the good folks at the Hole and Levi’s, got together […]

Basel Week Miami ’10 – The Island

During the week of Art Basel Miami Beach, there are countless fairs to check out, parties to attend, street and public art to peruse, and fashionable people to gaze at. Although the city facilitates much of this with its warm weather in December and abundant day and night venues, it doesn’t make much use of Miami’s natural habitat and scenic wonders.  Many who visit during Art Basel never even get to see a single wave or put on a pair of flip-flops.  Enter The Island. […]

Showing: Aurel Schmidt – “Summer Bummer” @ The Fireplace Project

Opening last weekend at the Fireplace Project was Aurel Schmidt’s newest solo show  – “Summer Bummer”. The New York artist, socialite, and one of this year’s Whitney Biennialists, produced a lovely new collection of intricate drawings built from what others consider trash or detritus – her signature twist. For this more simple body of work, themes of flowers and butterflies are prevalent – perfect for a little summer show in the Hamptons. More images after the jump…

Aurel Schmidt T-Shirts for Opening Ceremony

If you have been following artist Aurel Schmidt’s work, you may notice that she prefers to draw litter, debris, or ephemera that you could find in any trash bin or on the ground within a few steps of any busy city street.  Take, for example, the above drawing. The piece hangs in Opening Ceremony’s Ace Hotel shop and now has been been used to create 11 t-shirts, each one containing a different letter from the original artwork.  You can purchase one for $60 each at […]

Preview: The 2010 Whitney Biennial

Art critic Charlie Finch just posted on artnet one of the first reviews of the 2010 Whitney Biennial, which officially opens tomorrow. As each Biennial is an attempt to take the pulse of contemporary art in America, it is usually a challenging show, spanning all mediums, which typically offers at least something of interest for any art lover. However, it seems that Finch thinks a little more highly of this Biennial, ending his review “This is not only the greatest of Whitney Biennials, it is […]
