With the opening of his Los Angeles exhibition scheduled in less than three weeks, KAWS will give the public another high profile look at his imagery with the launch of Pharrell’s fragrance “G I R L” this week. Released by Commes des Garçons online at Dover Street Market on August 28th and in-store in London on September 1st, the signature scent features a design by KAWS and will continue the long standing friendship (collector, curator) between the singer-songwriter and New York-based artist. After sharing photos of the high profile installation and an in depth look at the creation of new commissioned pieces for his new show in Shanghai, we now turn our attention to Cai Guo-Qiang’s explosive opening festivities at the Power Station of Art. The multi-color aerial spectacular hosted at the riverfront of the museum was a crowd pleaser and highlighted the firework art skills from the Chinese artist. After sharing photos with you earlier this week from Tomokazu Matsuyama’s (interviewed) current showcase at Harbour City in Hong Kong, we now have word of what comes next at the Tsim Sha Tsui hotspot. Starting on September 18th, KAWS will make a return appearance with an ambitious new sculpture in the Ocean Terminal forecourt, site where his previous massive Passing Through companion was situated in 2010 (covered). Openings: Sam Falls – “Light Over Time” @ MetroTech Center

The Los Angeles-based Sam Falls recently returned to Brooklyn for an outdoor project with the help of The Public Art Fund. Entitled Light Over Time, this exhibition held in the MetroTech Center courtyard clearly brings Fall’s installation magic into the outdoor setting. There are five sculptural works placed in select locations that invite the viewer to interact with the pieces. Florentijn Hofman’s Giant Rubber Duck (Los Angeles)

For fans in Los Angeles who looked at Hong Kong in envy as Florentijn Hofman’s giant “rubber” duck (covered) rolled into the harbor, your time has come. The whimsical inflatable childhood bath toy will be viewable at the Tall Ships Festival from August 20-24 starting today when the oversized duck (61 feet, 11 tons, about 85 feet wide and about 110 feet long) will lead the Grand Parade of Sail into San Pedro at 2 pm. Last Thursday, AM was on hand for the opening of Materia Radiante featuring new works from Brazilian artist Bruno Novelli at Denver’s David B. Smith Gallery.
