Ron Mandos Gallery in Amsterdam entered the new year with, Heimlich, a solo show by the Dutch artist Maurice van Tellingen. For this exhibition, he created new sculptural works in his familiar style, where his pieces “resemble reality just like reality resembles itself”. The works show a detached detail of an interior or exterior space, by creating and showing all the elements that come along with it – from human presence, realistic texture and details, signs of deterioration, to creating a false source of light. We stopped by Kelsey Brookes‘ first solo exhibition recently in New York at Judith Charles Gallery. Entitled Better Living Through Chemistry, this show features a large body of work focusing in on his abstract paintings and musings via eye catching molecular structures. This style is also based on his scientific background and delves further into drugs and its effect on the human consciousness. By now, you’ve all heard the monumental buzz that this Yayoi Kusama’s exhibition I Who Have Arrived In Heaven has created with lines that exponentially grew from 30-45 mins to 4-6 hours in the course of less than a month. James Jean (interviewed) recently shared the first painting for 2014 that he has been working on. Fans of the talented artist have probably noticed that he has been on a sabbatical recently and anxiously await his return to the gallery scene – hopefully this will be the year. In the meantime, 2013 saw the release of his iBook, the revival of his Instagram, a new tumblr site showcasing new and old works. Discuss James Jean here.

Basel Week Miami ’13: Daniel Arsham – “Future Relic”

One of the launch events during Art Basel Week was Future Relic by Daniel Arsham (seen above with artist DRx Romanelli). Presented by OHWOW Gallery, this event served to debut a collaborative film starring Daniel with fashion designer Richard Chai and features Ben Louis Nicholas as the director of photography and music created by Swiss Beats. Upcoming: Andrew Schoultz Handpainted Skateboard Show @ Uprise

This Saturday (Jan 4th, 7-10pm) in Chicago, Andrew Schoultz will be opening a special show featuring hand-painted skateboards. Held at Uprise Skateboard Shop, the 10 custom decks sound like they will be priced very reasonably at $300-$500 with the proceeds going to benefit After School Matters, a non-profit organization that offers local high school teens innovative out-of-school activities. Showing: Candice Tripp & Wes Walker – “I’M NEVER SHOPPING HERE AGAIN!” @ Black Rat Projects

On view earlier this month at the Black Rat Projects in London was an interesting collaborative show from Candice Tripp (interviewed) and Giles Walker (known for his immersive robotic installations). IʼM NEVER SHOPPING HERE AGAIN included the surreal, dark paintings & sculptural pieces from Tripp as well as some animatronic magic from Walker. The exhibition was hard to capture with photos (although there are some for you to peruse below) so we have included a video to give you a better idea of what went down. Photo credit: Natasa Leoni.
