Previews: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Sky Ladder” @ MOCA (Los Angeles) – Part I

AM was on hand a couple days ago as explosive Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang started his preparations for his upcoming exhibition at the Los Angeles MOCA set to open on April 8th. The showing will be the first West Coast solo for the world-renowned New York-based artist and feature new commissioned works including three gunpowder drawings and a public outdoor explosion event created onsite at the museum. This first session that we attended saw the creation of Chaos in Nature (approx. 11 x 49 feet), […]

Studio Visits: Aakash Nihalani @ Volta ’12

Time flies – it’s already time for Armory Week 2012 in New York. As the Big Apple preps for the onslaught of art and events, Aakash Nihalani quietly works on his upcoming exhibition with the Carmichael Gallery at this year’s satellite Volta Art Fair. We’ve all seen his street works and recent stint at the Facebook offices, but now we take a look at some of the sculptural works he has been prepping for the fair. AM was invited over to his Brooklyn studio to see […]

Update: Josh Keyes

If you had been keeping abreast of photos from Josh Keyes’ (interviewed) studio blog (first mentioned here), you would have seen some paintings in progress among other things. These new beauties are presumably for the Joseph Gross Gallery at the University of Arizona when the Portland-based painter will next have a solo exhibition come May. Take a look at some more glimpses after jump and also look for a print release soon from Keyes with Tiny Showcase.

Openings: Tomokazu Matsuyama x The Standard – Snow Globes

Last week, AM caught the opening night for the unveiling of Tomokazu Matusyama’s (featured) exclusive snow globe (available here) created with The Standard Hotel. Continuing a long line of quality artist collaborations with artists like Ryan McGinness, KAWS, and Jose Parla, this unique project takes Matsu’s iconic Running Deep series of paintings and miniaturizes them into unique sculptures. Previews: Delia Brown – Last Exit: Punta Junta @ Martha Otero Gallery

Opening tonight at Martha Otero Gallery is a new show by Delia Brown. Entitled Last Exit: Punta Junta, this exhibition is a continuation of her Guerilla Lounging Project where parties are hosted in the luxuriously pimped out playgrounds of the upper class. The difference is that the ones depicted living it up are those of the middle and lower classes. Delia works during these few hours of decadence and fantasy to capture these unique situations with her brush. The show runs until April 14th, so stop by if […]

Art Focus: Stephanie Pierce

After a little hiatus, our Art Focus is back this week and our artist is Stephanie Pierce. She currently lives and teaches in Fayetteville, Arkansas and creates these ethereal oil on linen and canvas paintings that play with light, abstraction, and fragments of color. With imagery based mainly on a room and its contents, the feeling of flux and transitory nature achieved in her work is interesting considering the simple nature of her subjects. See more work and her artist statement after the jump…

Kehinde Wiley Portrait of Santigold On New Album Cover

Take a look at this cover art for Santigold’s new album Master of My Make-Believe set to be released on May 1st. Along with her photographed conceptually as a Bond-girl and mafia Don, you can also see her painted as an army officer in the background by Kehinde Wiley. The signature stye in which the singer is rendered references 18th-century British artist Joshua Reynolds’s painting of Banastre Tarleton titled Portrait of an Officer, and is Wiley’s first painting of a woman ever. Check out the […]
