Basel Week Miami ’11: Jason Shawn Alexander – “Undertow” @ 101/exhibit

Among the abundance of standalone exhibitions that AM attended during Art Basel Week Miami, one that stood out was Jason Shawn Alexander’s showing at 101/exhibit. Undertow came highly recommended by our friends at Hi-Fructose, and when we made it to the opening we could see why. The LA-based artist’s figurative work was large-scale, gritty, full of emotion & raw energy, and is certainly something you should check out if you are in the area through February 8th. More photos from the opening after the jump…

Travelogue: Kelsey Brookes – RVCA in Hawaii

Recently RVCA rented four houses on the North Shore in Hawaii and put an eclectic group of people together including Julian Schnabel, Pat Tenore, Lindsay Lohan, and Estevan Oriol among many others. One of those also invited was painter Kelsey Brookes who took advantage of the setting and time to do things he loved – eat, surf, and paint. At the end of their time together, Kelsey cut apart a larger painting of small faces and gifted everyone a little piece. More photos after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11: Jonathan LeVine @ Scope

Taking a closer look at this year’s Scope art fair, we zoom in on New York’s Jonathan LeVine Gallery. They brought some old and some new to show Miami where they’ve come from and some of the new talent that’s coming down the pipeline. We caught WK Interact and Olek presenting fresh works alongside newcomers to the gallery such as Jason DeCaires Taylor and Aakash Nihalani with their thought provoking installations/photography. Check it out after the jump.

Basel Week Miami ’11 / Streets: Andrew Schoultz (Part II)

After reporting on some in-progress photos of an two-sided epic mural by Andrew Schoultz for Primary Flight in Miami, we head back to get some completed shots. The walls were somewhat hidden from view, across from the ROA mural if you know where that is, but when seen in person, one can begin to imagine why it took 2 weeks to finish what with details like bricks each individually painted and custom curb stops. The amazing thing was this project was only one of many […]

Basel Week Miami ’11: Marcel Dzama @ David Zwirner

Now that Art Basel Week Miami has passed for another year, we’ve had a chance to catch our breath a little. We still have more to share with you though like Marcel Dzama’s work at the David Zwirner booth at the main fair. Taking center stage was this inset intricately conceived diorama featuring the NY-based artist’s sculptural skills and sense of theater. More photos of his other work for the booth after the jump…

Events: Tauba Auerbach – “[2,3]” Book Launch Party @ Printed Matter

We recently attended a party at New York’s Printed Matter to celebrate the long-awaited release of Tauba Auerbach’s [2,3]. The small, artist-book shop was filled to capacity that night with people eager to pick up their pre-ordered copies, those curious to see the final product for themselves and others just wanting to wish the artist congratulations on a job well done. The party included a lovely performance by singer/musician Glasser, for whom Auerbach designed the cover of her album, Ring. Over two years in production, […]
