This Saturday, the agnès b. Galerie Boutique will be opening their latest show featuring acclaimed photographer Massimo Vitali. The Italian artist will be in attendance for the opening reception from 6-9 and be on hand to sign editions of two of his recently published books: Natural Habitats and Landscape with Figures. Starting this Friday (Dec.9), New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art will be pulling one of their permanent collection’s most beloved works out of storage and putting it back on display. Calder’s Circus was created by Alexander Calder while he was living in Paris in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He transformed simple, everyday materials such as wire, cork and wood into all the settings and participants found in an actual circus—only miniaturized to fit within a few portable suitcase. Some of you may remember – a little while back, we posted this great video from Allison Schulnik on our facebook page. Seeing her deliciously thick and textured paintings at the Mark Moore booth (more on this later) at PULSE during Art Basel Week reminded us to share Mound with our readers here as well. Schulnik actually went to CalArts to specifically study experimental animation and her excellent technique certainly shows. Discuss Allison Schulnik here.

For fans of KAWS that have collected the first two colors of his elusive SpongeBob print, the good news is he’s going to be releasing the anticipated third color to round out the trifecta on December 13th. Arguably the hottest party on South Beach during Basel Week was the CULO book party held by Sean “P Diddy” Combs and Valmorbida. There was no sign of KAWS this year in person at Art Basel Week Miami. Perhaps it’s because he is preparing for his upcoming show, FOCUS:KAWS (teased), at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Judging from this photo, the catalog is ready to go as well as some installed 20″ tondos in the background that look familiar. Preview: Linnea Strid – “As It Falls Over You” @ Thinkspace

Sweden-based painted Linnea Strid is getting set to unleash a new body of work for her show this Saturday, December 10th, at Thinkspace. The LA exhibition, entitled As It Falls Over You (a joint show with Nathan DeYoung), will showcase some of Strid’s signature hyperrealism and feature some of her favorite imagery – dripping wet faces and their interplay with water. Another artist whose work caught our eye during Art Basel Week Miami was Do Ho Suh’s creations for Lehmann Maupin at the main fair. Like his showing at the NY gallery back in September (covered), the Korean sculptor and installation artist brought some captivating household items created from translucent fabric that attracted many fair-goers to examine their ethereal details up close. Basel Week Miami ’11: Scope

One of the satellite fairs we attended during Art Basel Week Miami was Scope. Housing a variety of genres, we saw a healthy mix of street art, low brow and emerging contemporary art working together as gallerists brought work from artists which you may be familiar with. From OsGemeos to Roa, Ron English to Ray Caesar, Aakash Nihalani to Jenny Morgan, there seemed to be something for everyone at this fair. Check out more photos after the jump.

As members of a special group of artists from NY, Ryan McGinley, Dash Snow, and Dan Colen will be forever linked – all have achieved their success in their own right, some more infamously than others.
