This week’s Art Focus features the haunting works of Korehiko Hino. The Japanese painter is known for his portraits of characters in trance-like states with large unblinking eyes often superimposed on vibrant backgrounds. When viewing his paintings, one can’t help looking into the mesmerizing and disturbing gaze of his subject, engaging in a staring contest that can’t be won. On Friday, Tauba Auerbach unveiled a truly unique body of work at John McWhinnie @ GHB in East Hampton, NY. The show entitled A Book Is Not An X (previewed) is a play on a statement she made last year in an Artforum review of Carsten Nicolai’s book Grid Index: “a book is an X-axis. A couple Fridays ago, Orange County was treated to a captivating installation by James Marshal aka Dalek (interviewed) at the Hurley Space Gallery. Immersed in all directions by the New York-based artist’s geometric creations, viewers were also introduced to a matching line of Phantom 4D Board Shorts as well as some surfboards and bikes. Just this Saturday, the SFMOMA hosted an intriguing posthumous dialogue between Swiss-born Modernist Paul Klee and the very much living Andrew Schoultz (previewed). Images in Dialogue featured new works from the SF-based Schoultz displayed side by side with Klee’s work with the former pieces created in response to the latter’s paintings.
