AM got a chance to attend the opening of Art Machine at The Hole recently. The collaboration between the gallery and NY fashion collective ALIFE featured a special vending machine where artwork could be purchased and dispensed. With a show filled with such plethora of strong and iconic works from an A-list of artists, Suggestivism definitely deserves a second look. If our coverage of the opening didn’t encourage you to see the exhibition in person, perhaps this video from Hurley featuring some footage of the art as well as an interview with curator and artist Nathan Spoor will convince you to head over to the Grand Central Art Center before April 17th, the close date. Opening tomorrow at Chelsea’s David Zwirner is the latest solo show by Marcel Dzama, entitled Behind Every Curtain. The exhibition will feature the artist’s film, A Game of Chess, alongside related drawings, sculptures and dioramas. As the name suggests, the movie is based on the classic strategy board game, with Dzama’s fantastic characters dressed in chess piece-themed costumes and masks, battling to the death on top of a checkered board. Openings: David Ellis – “Mola Salsa” @ New Image Art

A couple weeks back, multifaceted art dynamo David Ellis filled New Image Art with his new body of work Mola Salsa. Featuring a more figurative collection of paintings, the work also maintained hints of Ellis’ geometric patterns and linework. We’ll see if he develops this new direction more next month at the Joshua Liner Gallery booth for PULSE New York during Armory Week. More photos after the jump…

Releases: Tomokazu Matsuyama x Paper Monster – “Running Even Deep”

Our friends at Paper Monster have been working long and hard on a very special print by Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama (interviewed). Entitled Running Even Deep, the print involved a 23-layer screenprinting process using oil based inks, as well as giclee, on thick deckled-edged paper. In addition, every one of the very limited edition of 50 has been uniquely spray-painted by Matsu himself. Preview: “Linear Empires” @ White Walls SF

White Walls has put together a show opening tonight in SF that feature artists whose work, across various mediums, play with ideas of symmetry, lines, and geometric design. The show entitled Linear Empires will include artists Augustine Kofie, Geoff Campen, Diana Ruiz, Mary Iverson, Richard Pearse, Brendan Monroe and Gregory Ito.
