As the 2010 FIFA World Cup gets closer, it’s only natural that more and more projects related to the world’s greatest sporting event come to light. Earlier, we brought you news of a Kehinde Wiley x Puma World Cup project and now word comes that FIFA has commissioned 17 artists to create soccer-themed works of art. Having shown in London just a few months back, Raymond Pettibon continues his European tour with a show of new works at the venerable Gladstone Gallery in Brussels. The exhibition continues on Pettibon’s themes of exploring the American psyche through images and text. His comic strip-style narratives combine stunningly rendered images in the artist’s unique style with text drawn from a number of sources, including poet William Blake, vernacular speech, and pulp magazines. The Future Tense launches itself in London this week with a showing of represented artists Katrin Fridriks, Lee Baker, Mark Webber, Tom Oldham, Joseph Loughborough, Jamie Shaw and Louis Hudson. We particularly like the look of Katrin Fridriks’ work, pictured above. Set to open tonight at New Image Art is Richard Colman’s “Keep Out the Light”. The new body of work will feature some of the artist’s signature imagery with increasingly frantic geometric patterns interspersed with the interconnected characters that inhabit his paintings. The bright and beautiful hues of his configurations provide a stark contrast to his violent and often overtly sexual world.
