Interviews: Michael Page – “ThankYouGoodbye” @ Varnish Fine Arts

Michael Page’s newest show, “ThankYouGoodbye” (teased), features a body of work inspired by climate change in places like Greenland and Alaska. Sadly, his show that opened at Varnish Fine Art in SF over the weekend will be the last in this space for the gallery. We had a chance to sit down for an interview with Page to talk about the new direction his work is going among other things. Interview after the jump…

Video: Ryan McGinness @ VA Museum of Fine Arts

Richmond’s Virgina Museum of Fine Arts is currently undergoing an expansion, scheduled to be completed by May 1, 2010. As part of that transformation, the VMFA has asked AM favorite Ryan McGinness (who last showed at Deitch) to create a large-scale, site-specific artwork based on the museum’s collection to greet visitors upon entering the museum.Â Watch the above video to see a hard-hatted McGinness visit his work’s future home and discuss the ambitious project with VMFA curator John Ravenal.

The annual BLAB! Show returns to Copro Gallery and brings with it the usual lineup of heavy hitters. NYT’s Art Critic Reviews Os Gemeos Mural

Earlier this week, the New York Times published a glowing review by esteemed art critic Roberta Smith of the recently completed mural by Os Gemeos (covered). Other than being mistaken about this being the twins’ first public artwork in Manhattan (first legal public artwork, perhaps), Smith gets everything else right, describing the stunning work in loving detail. It’s not everyday that the “Old Gray Lady” gives such accolades to street artists, so congrats to Os Gemeos. Well deserved. Discuss Os Gemeos here.

Rolling Stone’s Obama Cover by Shepard Fairey

Brendan Monroe (interviewed) will be exhibiting some new works in October at the Richard Heller Gallery in Santa Monica. We were able to get a glimpse of some of the things he was working on when we went by for a studio visit a couple months ago, but here is a new image of one of the sculptural elements in this new body of work.Â More to follow as the show draws nearer… Discuss Brendan Monroe here.

Here’s a pretty sweet piece from Hawaii native Edwin Ushiro’s upcoming show opening September 12th at LeBasse Projects. Two things that stand out about Ushiro’s work are the special “look” he has to his work that is a result of a special process he uses (more on this at a later time) and his talent of storytelling – something he talks about in this a thousand stories interview. Openings: Gilbert & George – “Jack Freak Pictures” @ White Cube

London duo Gilbert & George has returned to White Cube to show in their home town for the first time since their 2007 retrospective at the Tate Modern. The show, “Jack Freak Pictures” focuses on the Union Jack flag of Great Britain and G&G’s signature psychedelic photo transformation process. We found a couple more images from Josh Keyes‘ upcoming show to share with you since our first teaser article. Opening along with Vaughn Bell in a show entitled â€œNatural Selectionâ€ at the Swarm Gallery this Friday (Aug 7th), Josh should only have four pieces.Â Keyes’ fans will treat this as an appetizer to his big show atÂ Jonathan Levine coming up in Dec/Jan in New York.
