Mier Gallery in West Hollywood is currently showing the first solo exhibition of Los Angeles-based artist Louise Bonnet. The exhibition simply titled Paintings opened on April 23rd and will stay on view through June 4th. The show includes six large paintings and several drawings on paper showing Bonnet’s recognizable visual language and imagery. Her cartoon-like characters with no facial expressions feature exaggerated proportions of body parts that instead convey feelings of melancholy, nostalgia, and displacement. Ruttkowski;68 in Cologne, Germany is currently showing I can’t look at your face anymore, a solo by Pieter Janssen aka Parra. For his second exhibition with the gallery, the Dutch artist, illustrator and designer created an all new body of work consisting of canvases, sculptures and objects. Inspired by the phenomenon of selfies and the creation of edited selves in social media, the pieces in the show are focused on obscuring the face. For Art Basel in Switzerland coming up in June, Daniel Arsham will be presenting his signature “fictional archeology” to fans and collectors in Basel with a twist. While mainly working in black and white in the past due in part to his colorblindness, the Brooklyn-based artist received specially made lenses that corrected this problem last year and has recently been experimenting with works in color. Yoshitomo Nara recently returned to the Stephen Friedman Gallery in London for a fourth exhibition of new works. This show features new paintings on canvas, paintings on cotton mounted wood panel and the largest collection of new drawings on paper. Adolescent characters and animals are depicted with nuanced considerations of alienation, anger and curiosity. Juxtaposed with slogans and often salty language, they are at once cheeky, vulnerable and threatening. Age of Empire, a new solo from Andrew Schoultz opened last week at Joshua Liner Gallery in New York. The exhibition features painting and work on paper referencing patterns in history like war, natural disasters, and globalization as well as social, political, and economic crises. Showing: Marilyn Minter – “Pretty/Dirty” @ Orange County Museum of Art

Earlier this month, Marilyn Minter opened a new show at the Orange County Museum of Art entitled Pretty/Dirty. The retrospective features over 25 paintings made between 1976 and 2015, three video works, and several photographs that highlight the American artist’s focus on society’s obsession with feminine beauty. Included are her iconic and lush works that focus on various eroticized parts of the female body like the feet, lips, and eyes. The exhibition will be on view through July 10th. On May 7th, Athen B. Gallery will host a pop-up solo by Axel Void. Titled Nobody, the exhibition will open at 222 Broadway St. in Downtown Oakland at 7pm. The Miami-born artist, whose real name is Alejandro Hugo Dorda Meys has been known for dark, often figurative works that mixes text, classical painting and drawing.
