Previews: Mars-1, Damon Soule, Oliver Vernon – “Momentum” @ Space Gallery

After dipping their feet into the waters of the Denver art community with a mural a few months back (covered), Mars-1, Damon Soule, and Oliver Vernon return tonight with a full plunge. Momentum at Space Gallery features the Furtherrr Collective together again (see 2012, 2013, 2013) with a showing that highlights how well their imagery go together – whether it is in collaborative pieces or collectively when their individual works are seen side by side. Openings: CT Nelson – “Thick With Instinct” @ Knew Conscious Gallery

AM was on hand at Knew Conscious for the October 11th opening of Thick With Instinct, the latest work from Denver artist CT Nelson. This is his third solo show in as many years at the gallery, and as with previous years, fans will note his signature raging fields of flowing lights and haunting imagery. One of the stars of the Denver art scene, his annual show always draws a big crowd of enthusiastic viewers. The show is on display now through November 7th.

AM was on hand for Jenny Morgan’s 13th solo, The Golden Hour, at Denver’s Plus Gallery. The buzz around the exhibition was palpable with Morgan being on the cover of the August issue of Juxtapoz. Last Thursday, AM was on hand for the opening of Materia Radiante featuring new works from Brazilian artist Bruno Novelli at Denver’s David B. Smith Gallery. Inspired by the philosophy of Henri Bergson and the imagery of the Amazon rainforest, Mr. Novelli used punchy colors and contrasting geometric shapes to explore the concept of the diminishing boundaries between objects and their environment. Coming up on Thursday, August 14th, Bruno Novelli (aka Bruno 9li) will be opening his first solo show with David B. Smith Gallery in Denver. We have not been following the São Paulo-base artist of late, but the new works entitled Materia Radiante drew our attention with the use of vibrant colors and geometric forms inspired by long walks in the rainforests of his native county. Forsaking his adopted hometown of Portland for several weeks, Souther Salazar traveled to Denver in order to bring a new installation to life at the David B. Smith Gallery. Mark Dean Veca – “Le Poppy Den” @ David B. Smith Gallery

Last month, the David B. Smith Gallery gave Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) the go ahead to create a site specific installation in one of the rooms of their Denver showspace. Much like his showing last year at the Orange County Musuem of Art (covered), the LA-based artist created a space, dubbed Le Poppy Den this time, where attendees could be fully immersed in his signature “Toile de Jouy” like patterns. Oakland based artist Max Kauffman made the trek back to his former home town of Denver, Colorado for his solo show Aether Ceremony at Black Book Gallery. AM was on hand for the opening night of Jason Thielke’s (interviewed) third solo show at Denver’s David B. Smith Gallery. Deviating from his trademark female figures, the show features animals as well as landscapes of some of Colorado’s most recognizable geologic formations, including Red Rocks Amphitheater and Garden of the Gods. Last Friday was the opening night of Ryan McLennan’s newest show Fabrications at the David B. Smith Gallery in Denver.
