Steve “ESPO” Powers – Remixed Kanye West “Yeezus” Cover

ESPO (featured), who recently showed in Brussels at the Alice Gallery (covered), found time for a fun project last week. Taking the tempting blank slate of the minimalistic cover of Kanye West’s new Yeezus album, Mr. Powers covered the entire case with his characteristic imagery. The alternate cover takes quotes from controversial rapper himself as inspiration for the creation. Learn a little more about it here. Discuss ESPO here.

Showing: Stephen “ESPO” Powers – “Visual Blues” @ Alice Gallery

Last week, fans of ESPO (featured) in Brussels were treated to a new solo from the New York-based artist when Visual Blues opened up at the Alice Gallery. The new body of work centered around a series of small pieces he paints daily called Metaltations as well as larger versions of those pieces. The imagery centers around witty wordplays and imagery from his visual language all rendered with a minmalistic signpainting aesthetic. Along with a novel setup and display of the work (see above), Powers also created […]

Preview: Stephen Powers – “Visual Blues” @ Alice Gallery

Brooklyn-based artist and professorial sign painter, Stephen Powers aka ESPO (featured), is currently in Brussels where he’s setting up his solo show titled Visual Blues at Alice Gallery. For his second exhibition with the gallery, he prepared a big mural installation on the walls of the showspace as well as his latest enamel paintings on aluminum (Metaltations), but the centerpieces of the show are smaller pieces popularly known as Daily Metaltations. These 10” x 8” enamel paintings are mostly based on sketches inspired by everyday problems and pleasures, often on the […]

Other worthy videos include: Wheatpaste.Doc – a Brazilian documentary about wheat paste. Pharrell Williams Interviews David Salle & KAWS. An interview with Sarah Joncas about her show at Last Rites Gallery. […]

Openings: Steve “ESPO” Powers – “A Word Is Worth A Thousand Pictures” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Steve “ESPO” Powers’ (featured) recently opened a solo show in New York for the first time in seven years and it was a doozy. As mentioned in our studio visit (here & here), this new body of work entitled A Word is Worth A Thousand Pictures was fresh and to the point in a manner that is simply ESPO-esqe. Exhibited at Joshua Liner Gallery, works large and small from tremendous enamel on aluminum centerpieces to delicate nuggets of wisdoms called Daily Metaltations were on display. Created […]
