Continuing his penchant of working on unconventional creative projects, Pejac recently completed a few interventions at the Penitentiary Center of El Dueso in Spain. Situated at the entrance of artist’s hometown of Santander, it was built at the beginning of the 20th century on the remains of one of Napoleon’s old forts and is considered the oldest prison in the country. A couple weekends ago, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (with support from Library Street Collective) opened a new show from art superstar KAWS. Entitled ALONE AGAIN, the exhibition features five large scale companion sculptures and three paintings displayed on a special mural painted by the Brooklyn-based artist. Utilizing his signature bold colors and abstracted pop imagery, the paintings really stand out against the 62-foot black and white snoopy-esque backdrop. French artist Invader recently unveiled an ambitious project he has been secretly working on for two years now at the historic Palace of Versailles. A couple weeks ago, Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in New York opened up a solo show from Jose Parla entitled Anonymous Vernacular. One of the things that stands out to us about the Cuban-American artist’s work are the rich textures and complex layers he creates in each of his pieces, a collage of oil paints, graffiti inspired scrawl, acrylic finishes, and torn advertisments. Following up on the reveal (covered) of the incorporation of his work in Dior’s Pre-Fall 2019 Collection, Hajime Sorayama has now helped design a traveling pop-up store for North America. Constructed from metal, the structure draws from the futuristic theme of the campaign and matches of course the Japanese artist’s signature sexy robot, of which a 5 meter tall version will stand guard outside. Earlier this week, the West 24th Street location of the Gagosian Gallery in New York opened a solo show from Jonas Wood featuring new paintings and works on paper. The fresh selection of work continues his use of art references, plants, everyday objects, and people in architectural interiors and exteriors, as well as a series of his depictions of pots and ceramic vessels.
