Streets: Invader (Versailles)

French artist Invader recently unveiled an ambitious project he has been secretly working on for two years now at the historic Palace of Versailles. The anonymous street artist has placed about 40 of his infamous tiled works around the city, with some that look to be hidden in plain sight on the grounds itself. If you follow him on Instagram, you will see he based the works on various artworks, motifs, and attractions (ie: the Hall of Mirrors and Sun King symbol) associated with the national […]

Interviews / Releases: Jerry Hsu – “The Beautiful Flower Is The World” Book

May 21st will mark the official public release of Jerry Hsu‘s second book, The Beautiful Flower Is the World, photo documentation of the curiosities spotted in the world around us. The San Jose-based pro-skateboarder and artist got into the spotlight with his Table for One project featuring photos of strangers dining alone a couple of years ago, and the new publication only confirms his killer sense of humor and an eye for life’s little absurdities. As part of the first edition, an undisclosed number of […]

Showing: Jose Parla – “Anonymous Vernacular” @ Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery

A couple weeks ago, Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in New York opened up a solo show from Jose Parla entitled Anonymous Vernacular. One of the things that stands out to us about the Cuban-American artist’s work are the rich textures and complex layers he creates in each of his pieces, a collage of oil paints, graffiti inspired scrawl, acrylic finishes, and torn advertisments. Along with fourteen gritty new paintings, the Brooklyn-based artist has also included a reworked found object sculpture that speaks to the issue of homelessness. He further states – […]

Showing: Paul McCarthy – “Mixed Bag” @ Xavier Hufkens

Currently on display at Brussel’s Xavier Hufkens are a series of sculptures, paintings and video work from Paul McCarthy in a show entitled Mixed Bag. The work selected for the exhibition, which spans the gallery’s two locations, originate from three of the American artist’s most important video performance installations of the last two decades: CP(Caribbean Pirates), WS (White Snow) and CSSC (Coach Stage Stage Coach) / DADDA (Donald And Daisy Duck Adventure). However, much of the sculptures on display are new iterations, the most attention grabbing of which are the pieces sprayed […]

Showing: “POST ANALOG STUDIO” @ The Hole

Currently in New York, The Hole has a group exhibition on view entitled POST ANALOG STUDIO, the third installment of their ongoing series of shows examining digital media’s impact on art making. The works on view for this iteration of the project expands the roster to include artists who work with digital video and sculpture with specific interest in CAD rendering and 3D modeling, on top of focusing on those those who create digitally-influenced paintings. Participants includes: Adam Parker Smith, Alan Resnick, Anne Vieux, Ara Peterson, Ben […]

Showing: Hajime Sorayama x Dior Traveling Pop-Up Store

Following up on the reveal (covered) of the incorporation of his work in Dior’s Pre-Fall 2019 Collection, Hajime Sorayama has now helped design a traveling pop-up store for North America. Constructed from metal, the structure draws from the futuristic theme of the campaign and matches of course the Japanese artist’s signature sexy robot, of which a 5 meter tall version will stand guard outside. The pop-up pod is currently at Washington D.C.’s CityCenterDC development until May 6, and will travel to Jewel Court in South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, California from May […]

Streets: Nuart Aberdeen (Part III)

The other day, we teased some of the new public works that were being created during the recently held Nuart Aberdeen 2019. Today, we wanted to showcase the other seven artists whose work we’ve enjoyed during our stay. Working around the idea of telling stories, the artists uncovered less known parts of the city’s history (Vhils), revealed another side of important events (Axel Void), and referenced the unfortunate reality the city is facing (Strøk). Scattered around the city center, these pieces show the variety of […]

Showing: Jonas Wood @ Gagosian (New York)

Earlier this week, the West 24th Street location of the Gagosian Gallery in New York opened a solo show from Jonas Wood featuring new paintings and works on paper. The fresh selection of work continues his use of art references, plants, everyday objects, and people in architectural interiors and exteriors, as well as a series of his depictions of pots and ceramic vessels. Each painting in the exhibition is accompanied by a corresponding small-scale work on paper with all 30 works featured in a fully illustrated catalogue. Streets: Nuart Aberdeen (Part II)

As we previously reported, for the third time in a row we’ve spent the Easter weekend taking part in Nuart Aberdeen‘s program while enjoying the new works created on the streets of sun-basked Aberdeen in Scotland. This year’s festival included 13 artists from around the globe, who added their signature marks to an already impressive collection of public art produced throughout the city. Fully aware of the risks of possible oversaturation with large murals, Nuart Festival director and curator, Martyn Reed, made sure the works did […]

Coachella’s Program of International Artist Installations

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, or more popularly referred to as Coachella, is known primarily for its music (and for some, the fashion choices of its guests). Festival-goers discuss and pore over the list of bands, DJs, singers, and other stage acts in determining how good Coachella will or will not be. However, almost as important in the actual experience of the Coachella weekend is the larger than life visual art and installations. This year’s new and returning featured artists include Sofia Enriquez (paisley sculptures), […]
