Openings: How & Nosm – “Way Things Are” @ Pace Prints

One of the more memorable gallery exhibitions opening up during Armory Week was at Pace Prints featuring How & Nosm. Entitled Way Things Are, the show from the Spanish born, German raised twins took their urban visual vocabulary to another level. The new body of work comprised of unique works on paper created in partnership with Pace at their storied facilities. Paying homage to the quest for diversity in repetition, the twins took the art of silk screening in different direction with hand painted collage works in signature […]

Streets: JR (Germany)

Earlier this month, we shared some shots of work from artist JR (interviewed) from his solo at Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden, Germany. Not surprisingly, while there, the French “photograffeur” spent time on the streets working on new pieces to share with the public. Continuing the concepts of his UNFRAMED project, he visited residents in the area and chose some of their photos to paste up, exploring the city’s history as the link between Germany and France. Studio Visits: Diederick Kraaijeveld

Diederick Kraaijeveld is a quite a special character on the art scene today. Historian by profession, he was working as an investigative journalist for many years, doing some creative works in his spare time during family visits in France. When his journalist job became less challenging and fulfilling, his hobby slowly took over, and about six years ago, he decided to make a significant career move. Nowadays, he is working and living in Hilversum in the Netherlands, where he makes his unique artwork that gets […]

Contests / Releases: Tim Doyle – “Springfield” Prints

For fans of Tim Doyle out there, you may have enjoyed our article about his recently closed show at Spoke Art in San Francisco. UnReal Estate III featured more of his series exploring places that we will never be able to visit – famous locations from our favorite TV shows. At the end of the exhibition, Doyle made an open edition available featuring a look the Springfield sign from the longest-running American sitcom, The Simpsons. The print seen above is also available in a glow in the dark variant and […]

Showing: Thomas Canto @ Vieux Panier Hotel

Thomas Canto recently created a futuristic installation inside of one of the rooms at the Vieux Panier Hotel in Marseilles. This small hotel is built in an old Corsican grocery shop, and it has five unique rooms, each designed in a different style by a contemporary artist for a period of one year. Titled “XL Room”, Canto’s abstract installation combines ropes and painted surfaces inside the space. Following the simple and clean black & white color scheme he is known for, this installation is the artist’s […]

Streets: Maya Hayuk – Bowery & Houston Mural (Part II)

Last month, AM caught up with Brooklyn based artist Maya Hayuk as she braved the polar vortex conditions that have plagued NYC all winter. Spending more than a week hand painting the entire Bowery and Houston mural with her signature style, she was finally able to completed her visual contribution to the iconic New York street corner. Sadly, a week later some vandals defaced her work, but Maya did return to reverse their damage soon after. Check out more photos of the mural fresh after completion below… […]

Openings: Logan Hicks – “Love Never Saved Anything” @ PMM Art Projects (Popup)

Last week, during Armory Week, Brooklyn-based artist Logan Hicks held a fresh exhibition at PMM Art Projects‘ pop-up location on NYC’s Lower East Side. Entitled Love Never Saved Anything, Hicks’ new show seems to be exploring underwater elements as the subject matter, with much success. He has brought another dimension of detail and color in this body of work, which takes his signature stencil technique to a whole new level. Another surprise in the exhibition is the second level of the gallery, which showcases Hicks’ […]

Studio Visits: Swoon – VNA “NYC Takeover 2.0” @ Supra NYC

During January, our friends at Very Near Almost (VNA) invited us to come along on a visit to Swoon (interviewed) Brooklyn studio while they conducted an intimate photo shoot for their 25th issue. Swoon and her crew graciously opened up their sun-drenched Red Hook space and allowed us to watch them work on some upcoming projects. Typically, Swoon’s creative process involves a multitude of techniques, from hand cut lino blocks to drawings, delicate hand cut patterns to intricately sown finishings. There isn’t a detail that isn’t […]

Banksy For The #WithSyria Campaign

Elusive British artist Banksy is back in the spotlight again with another worthy cause. After recently donating the original Heart Balloon for charity, and raising $650,000 for Haiti (covered), Bristol’s most popular man of mystery is at it again by contributing to #WithSyria project. For this project the artist revised one of his most famous and evolved images – Balloon Girl aka Girl With Red Balloon.  The new “version” with a little girl wearing traditional Syrian clothes was added to his official website the other day – Banksy.co.uk, along […]

Armory Week ’14: Volta

One of the satellite fairs we visited first during New York’s Armory Week is Volta. This unique event does not showcase a sampling of a diverse roster of artists like most booths, but instead the invited gallerists select one artist to focus on. This results in a memorable way to keep the viewer’s attention as they run through the aisles focusing on one gallery and discovering a single artist at a time. Photo credit: AK for Arrested Motion.
