Previews: Saber – “Ugly American” @ The Outsiders (Newcastle)

Tomorrow (September 6th) in the UK, SABER (interviewed) will be unveiling all new works at The Outsiders in Newcastle. Entitled Ugly American, the graffiti artist’s European solo debut looks to feature two distinct set of works. One series consists of wood depictions (featured here) of the US Flag and the Union Jack, scarred and covered with his mark-making. The other pieces in the show are his abstract tags and urban calligraphy, sometimes peeking through from the back. Take a look at more preview images below… Discuss Saber here.

Upcoming: Kent Williams – “OPHTHALM: new drawings + paintings” @ Evoke Contemporary

Making his return to the showspace (see 2010), the Los Angeles-based painter has put forth work collectively entitled OPHTHALM: new drawings + paintings. You’ll have to wait a month to see the rest of what Williams has to offer, but the first image we have […]

Matt Doust 1984 – 2013

It saddens the staff here at AM to have to bring news of the tragic passing of Matt Doust last week from a seizure, just days away from his debut United States solo exhibition that was to be held at the Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. The young Perth-raised painter, who was shortlisted for the Archibald prize in 2011, a tribute to how well regarded his portraiture skills were in Australia. Collected internationally by fans including Jim Carrey and Mickey Rourke, the 29 year old was well […]

Studio Visits: Chris Valkov

Earlier this year, AM got to visit Chris Valkov in his studio as he prepared for his upcoming solo exhibition entitled Schematical Sabbatical. The Portland based artist uses a highly stylised aesthetic in his work, using a variety of mediums all derived from his background as an architectural draughtsman.  On initial inspection, his fluid line-work looks so tight that it could be mistaken for digitally created screen prints. Valkov is strictly old school though in his methodologies and his precise work is painted with One […]

Take a look at some stills and the video below, shot by photographer Jared Ryder, as the creative process was throughly explained by Martinez and footage from the shoot is revealed. Streets: KAWS @ BAM (Brooklyn)

The artist that took MTV’s Video Music Awards by storm (covered) is back in the streets of Brooklyn! Well, sorta. Before launching himself into the world of fine art and working with prestigious galleries such as Galerie Perrotin (here & here) and Honor Fraser (here & here), KAWS got started in the 90’s leaving his mark on NYC’s urban landscape with his signature graffiti tags and ad interventions. Now, he makes a prominent return outdoors with a fresh new mural coming up in Downtown Brooklyn, across […]

Streets: Cleon Peterson (Los Angeles)

Last weekend, Cleon Peterson took on a large scale mural in downtown Los Angeles. Coming off a great summer exhibition across the pond at London’s The Outsiders’ Soho gallery, Cleon kept his acerbic and raw edge as he composed a hard hitting piece featuring his signature “Brinksmen.” Created over the span of two days, the wall was painted with a bloody looking color scheme making it a fresh eye-catcher for the people of LA. Check out a detailed look below… Photos credit: @zagnutz Discuss Cleon Peterson here.

Studio Visit: Finok

Brazilian artist Finok aka Raphael Sagarra recently let us have a peek inside his home & studio in Sao Paulo, to have a look at some new paintings he’s been working on recently. The young artist got introduced to the art world on the streets of his city back in 2002 when he noticed some kids painting graffiti in the street. He was intrigued by this creative illegal activity and quickly got into the “graffiti game” himself. A few years later he became part of the infamous Vlok […]
