Last Wednesday marked the return of Faile’s Les BALLETS de FAILE to the New York City Ballet at the Lincoln Center. After an epic tower installation for their first showing (covered) at the same venue for the NYCB art series kick off, the duo Patricks premiered a new body of work that consisted of their signature prayer wheels. Andy Kehoe recently returned to New York for his third solo show with Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Entitled Luminous Reverie, this show explores the idea of experiencing a lucid moment while drifting along in a daydream. We enjoyed the works, which continued the new direction that he premiered during a show in Los Angeles last year (covered). New York’s Japan Society recently hosted an exhibition looking at the graphic impact of Japanese prints on art in the contemporary age. Entitled Edo Pop, this showcase playfully juxtaposed traditional ukiyo-e woodblock prints from such masters as Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige with current New York contemporary artists, such as Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) and Aiko. Anish Kapoor’s first major exhibition in Berlin, Sympathy for a Beloved Sun, has just opened at Martin-Gropius-Bau, curated by Berliner Festspiele. Set in a grand neoclassical style museum, the show is comprised of 70 different abstract poetic works spanning from 1982 to present. For the Venice Biennale, which will officially open this weekend, artist – activist Ai Weiwei has created an installation detailing his 81 days of incarceration by the Chinese government back in 2011. Entitled S.A.C.R.E.D (Supper, Accusers, Cleansing, Ritual, Entropy, and Doubt), the installation at the Sant’Antonin church feature six iron boxes that displays scenes of his captivity in the form of dioramas. Over the weekend, Augustine Kofie’s showing opened in Paris at Galerie OpenSpace, his first true solo outside of the States. Michael Johansson – “Familiar Abstractions” @ Vigeland-Museet

Last week, we brought a look inside the studio of Michael Johansson in Malmø where he was busy preparing for his show at the Vigeland-Museet in Oslo, Norway. We now have some photos of the recently closes said exhibition, Familiar Abstractions, which features the tetris-like created cubes made from everyday objects that the Swedish artist is known for. Along with these color-coded assemblages, Johansson also filled in some doorways in with some installation work as well as displayed some grid-like sculptural pieces from rack-like materials. Earlier today in Italy, illustrator, artist, and designer, Parra opened his solo show Il Senso di Colpa (The Guilt) at Galleria Patricia Armocida. In accordance with the title of his show, the artist focused this body of work on the feeling of guilt and similar emotions that are often limiting and troubling for many of us. Through a series of black and white drawings, watercolors, and his signature red & blue acrylic paintings, the Dutch artist showed situations and reactions that are somehow connected with feelings of guilt and self-judgement.
