Openings: Alex Lukas @ Guerrero Gallery

Over the weekend, fans of Alex Lukas in the Bay Area saw the return of the Philadelphia-based artist to Guerrero Gallery with a new solo show. Along with what was seen during our studio visit with Lukas featuring his signature dsytopian imagery and submerged cities, the fresh pieces also included some interesting new developments. Among these were series of folded diazotype editions that gave a real dimensionality to his work as well as some pieces with a more abstract look or a “breakdown”  of elements […]

Openings: Nychos – “Pellis Os Omentum” @ Galo Art Gallery

Currently on display through the weekend at the Galo Art Gallery in Torino, Italy is a solo show from Austrian painter Nychos. Pellis Os Omentum includes a series of paintings and drawings that closely references the anatomical focus and cartoonish quality of his street work. In addition, showgoers were able to enjoy the floor to ceiling mural that he painted in the two-level showspace. Check out more photos from the opening reception below… Photos via the gallery. Frieze Week NYC ’13: Frieze Art Fair – First Look

Frieze returned to New York City this weekend, and again put on an top-notch art fair that challenges the dominance of The Armory Show. Like last year, the event was held on scenic Randall’s Island and featured many of the world’s most respected galleries and artists. We visited the fair multiple times over the weekend, and will post about specific booths that caught our eye. But first, here’s a general overview of some of what we enjoyed from Frieze NYC 2013.

Preview / Giveaway: Nils Müller “Vandals” Book Release

German photographer Nils Müller recently published his second book titled Vandals with the official release on the May 1st, which will be followed by a gallery show at Ruttkowski68 (Cologne, Germany) opening on May 24th. Similar to his last book Blütezeit, published back in 2008, this latest volume covers the rarely exposed lives of urban vandals, and is released in regular and limited edition (limited to 500 signed copies now available for pre-order). Being a graffiti writer himself, Nils started using his camera solely for a documenting purpose only, but it didn’t take long until he […]

Openings: José Parlá & JR – “Wrinkles of the City, Havana” @ Bryce Wolkowitz

Last week, the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in New York hosted the opening of JR and José Parlá’s collaborative showing entitled The Wrinkles of the City, Havana. The joint works were based on the time they spent in Cuba a year ago painting street murals together (covered) as part of JR’s continuing project Wrinkles of the City where he photographs senior citizens and pastes their portraits on the walls of city buildings. An example of this was outside the showspace in the form of a mural which the two created several weeks ago (covered). Take a look at all the […]

Streets: JR – “Inside Out: NYC” @ Time Square

The French street artist and photographer seems to be everywhere. After our interview with JR last month, he has since brought his Wrinkles of the City project to Berlin (streets and in the gallery), premiered his latest film at the Tribeca Film Festival, got up on Riker’s Island, and gifted New York with a new collaborative show and mural with José Parlá. As if that was not enough, the self-styled “photograffeur” also found time to bring his mobile photobooth van (first seen in Japan) to the […]

Remed & Okuda @ Campo Viejo (Spain)

Remed and Okuda recently got together for a joint project in Spain at the Campo Viejo vineyards. Along with a mural they worked on, the two Spanish artists also collaborated on several sculptures at the Logroño location including the sweet large scale piece seen above. As you will probably agree, the geometric styles of both local artists blended together nicely and judging from the statement below, they will be working on future endeavors together. “Campo Viejo proposed to Okuda and Remed to create a work […]

Streets : Anthony Lister @ theAudience (Los Angeles) – Part II

Earlier this week, we brought you images of Anthony Lister‘s most recent mural in Los Angeles (covered). As usual, the Aussie’s trip didn’t end with just one piece to cover the walls of the city. On top of doing the large scale mural that sits on Beverly Blvd., he also painted inside the offices of theAudience. Creating this piece took no more than 20 minutes and as expected, Lister showed he can put on a show with his unique style, which at times gave the […]

Update: Martin Wittfooth

The last time we met up with Martin Wittfooth (interviewed), it was during a group show in New York (covered) and a solo show in Los Angeles (covered). Since then, the Brooklyn-based painter has taken time to work on some commissions he has lined up for the rest of the year including this massive piece that we just have to share with you. In this in-progress shot, you can see a powerful leopard stretched above a view of TriBeCa, the Hudson River, and Jersey. Look for […]

Studio Visit: Alex Lukas @ Guerrero Gallery

As an encore to his shows in 2010 and 2011 at the Guerrero Gallery, the Philadelphia-based artist will be opening a new solo at the San Francisco showspace this Saturday (May 11th). Reinterpreting American landscapes with a post-apocalyptic tilt, Lukas’ work  imagines a possible desolate future filled with of destruction and violence. The work also sees him continuing to explore incorporating printmaking techniques with traditional artistic processes. Take a look with us inside his studio as he was preparing for the upcoming show. Discuss this show here. […]
