Recap: Art Rotterdam 2018

This past weekend, from the 8th until the 11th February, the 19th edition of Art Rotterdam took place in the historical Van Nelle factory in the industrial area of one of the Europe’s major port cities. Yoskay Yamamoto // Facebook Artist In Residence Program

Recently, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) became the latest to go through the FB AIR Program. The artist-in-residence initiative saw the Los Angeles-based artist set up one of his signature clustered installations in one of Facebook’s new offices on the Palo Alto campus. Featuring a series of patterned paintings inspired by the LA sky, sculptural pieces, and hanging elements, Cali Sunset was a welcome addition to the creative work environment. Kehinde Wiley & Amy Sherald Obama Portraits Unveiled

Recently at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC, official paintings of Barack and Michelle Obama were unveiled at a special ceremony. For the first time in the gallery’s history, African American artists were commissioned by the president and first lady for the portraits with Kehinde Wiley working with the Mr. Obama and Amy Sherald capturing Mrs. Obama’s likeness. Almost exactly one year since his last visit to Sumatra, artist and activist Ernest Zacharevic went back to Western Indonesia to complete another project for the ongoing Splash And Burn initiative. Streets: Invader (Bhutan)

Traveling recently to Bhutan, Invader continued his usual practice of getting up with his signature tiled mosaic pieces in the streets. While the French street artist leaving his mark in the Buddhist Kingdom seemed to be well-received by the the locals that he encountered, his choice of placement was not without controversy. Recently in New York, a new showing from Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) finished its run at Arsham Fieg Gallery entitled Afternoon Delight. Over the weekend, the ever elusive Banksy unveiled a new piece in East Yorkshire in the city of Hull. Stenciled on what looks to be a permanently raised abandoned drawbridge, the image of a boy with a colander helmet can be seen with a cape and sword with the words DRAW THE RAISED BRIDGE! Currently at Ratio 3 in San Francisco, Ryan McGinley has on view his latest showing with the gallery entitled Paradiso. The new set of photos from the New York-based artist are prime examples of his signature aesthetic, celebrations of the human form in stunning natural settings. His latest works are the result of photography sessions in upstate New York during the winter and fall seasons, what look to be worthy additions to his much loved Road Trip series.
