Openings: JR – “Encrages” @ Galerie Perrotin

Last week, Galerie Perrotin paid host to French photographer and street artist JR in their Paris showspace when he displayed a new body of work entitled Encrages. Featuring his outdoor technique translated onto smaller found objects, the exhibition brought together many of the TED prize winner’s previous projects as we talked about in our studio visit leading up to the show. Of note, Massive Attack paid a surprise visit and delighted the the crowd in front of JR’s giant signature eye. Video of this and […]

Openings: Takashi Murakami – “Homage to Yves Klein” @ Galerie Perrotin

Last night, Homage to Yves Klein opened at the Galerie Perrotin in Paris. As the title suggests, the newest solo from Takashi Murakami was a tribute to Klein, the late French artist who is considered a leading proponent of Nouveau réalisme and developer of the famous International Klein Blue (IKB). This deep blue color was used liberally by the Japanese in his flower and skull motifs for this show as well as one of the monochromatic works that was offered in this new body of […]

Previews: Takashi Murakami – “Homage to Yves Klein” @ Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin

On the heels of his print retrospective, A History of Editions, over the summer at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Takashi Murakami will be returning to the Paris gallery for an exhibition of new original works, potentially more akin to his expansive Self Portraits show there in 2009. In a distinct departure for the superflat pioneer, Homage to Yves Klein, a reference to the post-war European artist who was considered a leading proponent of Nouveau réalisme, will debut a series of abstract color profile works inspired by […]

Studio Visits: Martin Oppel

Back during Art Basel Miami, we had the pleasure of visiting the Miami studio of Argentinian-born, Miami/NY-based artist Martin Oppel. Oppel, who has shown with Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Miami and Paris amongst others, works in a wide range of mediums—including painting, sculpture and most recently photography—often focusing on the materials and the process of art, while also making work that is visually attractive and thought-provoking. Dominating his space were what appeared to be gravity-defying stacks of rock, marble and concrete, which were in fact […]

Openings: KAWS – “Pay the Debt to Nature” @ Emmanuel Perrotin (Paris)

Street artist turned pop icon KAWS unveiled a new body of work, entitled Pay the Debt to Nature (previewed), at the Paris branch of Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin last night. Highlighting his immediately identifiable style though a collection of new acrylic paintings, the most well-known cartoon character of the 21st century took center stage in signature KAWS fashion. With clean lines and bold colors, Spongebob was dissected into puzzle-like fragments and pieced back together into multi-panel assemblages, a unique technique first seen early this year during […]

Teaser: KAWS @ Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin (Paris)

After “Passing Through” Hong Kong in a giant way (covered), KAWS will be bringing his unique brand of pop art to Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin on November 6th. It was at Perrotin’s Miami location in 2008 where KAWS made some of his first major waves in the fine art world with the Pharrell “curated” exhibit, Saturated, showing the public for the first time some of his impressively rendered, large scale Smurfs and Spongebob themed works. Although he has shown work in a previous group exhibit at […]

As anticipated, the highly praised “Stages” exhibition made it’s US debut yesterday in a beautiful pop-up space hosted by Deitch Projects in New York’s Soho district. AM was invited to attend the press preview and to speak with the all-star cast of artists about their works. We […]
