Openings: Isaac Cordal @ RAS Gallery

Last Friday, RAS Gallery in Barcelona hosted the opening of Isaac Cordal’s latest collection of works which were presented by SUBEN and curated by Maximiliano Ruiz. Cordal’s outdoor sculptural interventions, which often times are political in nature, made the transition to the gallery setting with pieces arrayed on a series of shelves and with floor installations. Also on display were some photos of his street works featuring his cement characters in various locations he has visited. You can seen all the work here, but also […]

Showing: Do Ho Suh – “Home Within Home” @ Leeum Samsung Museum of Art

Currently showing at the Leeum Samsung Museum of Arts is native son Do Ho Suh’s Home Within Home. Bringing his signature sculptural works made from sheer fabric, the Korean artist explores the idea of his nomadic lifestyle lying in various major metropolitan areas of the world. With colorful and ethereal suspended structures greeting visitors when entering, the exhibition certainly makes an impression. We even saw some of the household items from last December’s Art Basel on display. More photos via Designboom after the jump…

Openings: Ai Weiwei – “absent” @ Taipei Fine Arts Museum (Part I)

AM recently visited Taiwan to catch  Ai Weiwei’s absent exhibition at the TFAM (Taipei Fine Arts Museum). As the show’s title implies, Ai Weiwei was not present for the opening as he’s still working on clearing his previous “issues” with his home country’s government. This museum show of the controversial Chinese artist is practically a retrospective ,with spanning works from 1983-present, giving the people of Taiwan a taste of the talent and unique point of view that Ai brings to the table. The showing encompasses a broad […]

Now, he just informed us that he created several installations for the Facebook offices, joining the likes of David Choe on Mark Zuckerberg’s like list. More images after the jump…

Videos: “Threads: Documentary”

Back in July, Converse & Foot Locker invited four artists to Berlin to work on a project featuring street installations. Expertly curated to include artists who work with similar mediums, the resulting Threads documentary follows Hottea, Moneyless, Spidertag, and Aimee Dymond as they strung, spread, tied, and hung yarn & thread in complex patterns and shapes all in colors of the new Converse Padded Collar.

Swoon – “Anthropocene Extinction” @ ICA Boston

As we previewed the installation process a couple weeks back, Swoon (interviewed) has now completed her site-specific installation Anthropocene Extinction for The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA). Commissioned by the ICA as the fifth – and largest to date – project for the Sandra and Gerald Fineberg Art Wall, SWOON’s impressive creation that addresses humanities impact on the environment is anchored by a mural that spans the entire length of the lobby and rises 40 feet to the ceiling. A large scale portrait one of […]

The 400-pound, suspended bamboo sculpture entitled Anthropocene Extinction will soar over 40 feet, be accented by her signature labor intensive cut paper, and will be unveiled this Saturday, […]

Videos: Cai Guo-Qiang – “1040M Underground” @ Izolyatsia (Ukraine)

Just this past weekend, Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang opened his newest solo show at Izolyatsia, the  new art center in the industrial city of Donetsk, Ukraine. Entitled 1040M Underground, the new body of work was inspired by the explosive artist’s visit to the coal and salt mines (1040 meters below ground) of Ukraine’s industrial Donbas region. As you can see from the footage above from Vernissage TV, the environment of the mines was really captured by all the components of the exhibition. Discuss Cai Guo-Qiang […]

More photos after the jump…

Openings: “De Dentro e De Fora” @ São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP)

A couple nights ago, the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) played host to the opening of De Dentro e De Fora or Inside Out Outside In, seemingly a repeated title for many recent street art exhibitions and videos in some variation or another. Although the name of the exhibition lacked originality, what was important (the art) more than made up for it. Curated by Mariana Martins, Baixo Ribeiro, and Eduardo Saretta, the show featured new works by familiar names to AM readers like Invader […]
