Openings: Ernest Zacharevic – “Art Is Rubbish Is Art” (Malaysia)

Last week in Malaysia, Ernest Zacharevic opened a solo show at the Old Hin Bus Depot, mirroring his street work with paintings indoors as well as multiple installations and murals outdoors (more on these later). Entitled Art Is Rubbish Is Art, the body of work from the Lithuanian artist introduced to his fans in Penang the concept of “one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure,” seen in his art as well as the renovated abandoned space used as his gallery. Take a look at photos from the show as well as shots […]

Showing: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Falling Back to Earth” @ Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane)

As you probably surmised from our comprehensive coverage of Cai Guo-Qiang’s exhibition in Los Angeles last year, we quite enjoy the Chinese artist’s explosive techniques and inventive installations. That’s why if you will be near Queensland in the coming months, you need to make time to stop by Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art. Although there are other works in the show like Head On, a stream of suspended wolves, the highlight of the show is a new installation piece entitled Heritage. Although the message of the piece featuring a […]

Upcoming: Todd “REAS” James – “Swords & Sorcery” @ The Newsstand

Tomorrow (November 23, 3-9pm) in New York, Todd James will be releasing a zine at The Newsstand in Brooklyn (inside the Metropolitan Ave.-Lorimer St. stop on the G and L trains). Those attending the event will see a Sword & Sorcery themed installation based on the dungeons and dragons type pieces he has been posting onto his Instagram (some more of which are seen below) recently. Discuss Todd James here.

Previews: St. Monci – ‘Adventures in Technicolor’ @ 1975 Gallery

St. Monci is an artist that has been catching our eye lately. From his delicately composed gallery work to his large scale murals, his clean line-work and use of colour presents a strong abstract aesthetic. This weekend, he opens his solo exhibition at Rochester, NY’s 1975 Gallery. Adventures in Technicolor opens on Saturday, 7th September, and from the looks of these installation shots taken by photographer Hannah Betts it would be well worth checking out in person if you are in the area.

Preview: “Hammer Projects: Maya Hayuk” @ Hammer Museum

After showing her works in a couple of solo and group shows in the US and Europe recently, working on some huge public murals, releasing a sold out edition with Pictures On Walls, and releasing a line of swimsuits and bikinis with Billabong, American artist Maya Hayuk is opening her first solo museum show stateside at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Known for her symmetrical compositions, bright, lush, and often transparent colors, drips and woven patterns, Hayuk’s work is a perfect blend of traditional Ukrainian crafts […]

Openings: Push – “Adaptation” @ Known Gallery

For those who missed the three day only showing from PUSH at the Known Gallery, our friends at LA Taco have some photos of the event. Presented by Simple Mobile, Adaptation featured a setup from the LA-based graffiti artist that cleverly brought his signature patterns indoors, which at the same time transformed his usual 2D work into a three-dimensional interactive walkthrough installation. More photos below… Photo credit: LA Taco. Discuss PUSH here.

Openings: “California-Pacific Triennial” @ OCMA

Over the weekend, AM stopped by the Orange County Musuem of Art to take a look at the 2013 California-Pacific Triennial that just opened, in particular Mark Dean Veca’s (interviewed) installation. Along with some paintings he submitted, the Los Angeles-based artist also painted a room with his signature patterns and added some interesting adornments. Take a look at some of the work from the rest of the artists as well as more shots of Mark’s contributions. Photo credit: James Ng for Arrested Motion. Discuss Mark Dean Veca here.

Showing: Bäst – “SEAFOAM” @ Eric Firestone Gallery

Currently showing at the Eric Firestone Gallery in East Hampton through July 2nd is a new exhibition from Bäst. SEAFOAM features the NY-based street artist’s gritty paintings, mixed-media, and sculptural works, many of which use found materials from his home shores of Coney Island. The pieces for this solo feature his characteristic use of layering and collaging (with bits and pieces of advertisements and magazines) as well as display his re-occuring predilection for the use of many eyes in his portraiture. Take a look at more photos we took below, including […]

Openings: Barry McGee – “Drawing From The Street” @ ICA (Boston)

Our hearts go out to the people of Boston and the incredibly sad tragedy they are dealing with. We do however have some photos from Barry McGee’s mid-career survey at the ICA Boston to share with you (also see a video). Included in the exhibition are many of the works that the Bay Area artist has made famous including his bottle clusters, massive wall installations of his patterned and character-based pieces, tower of video screens, painted objects, and much more. Perhaps the most creative (seen above) was the […]

Openings: How & Nosm – “Late Confessions” @ Jonathan LeVine (Pop-up)

Last week, How & Nosm brought their outdoor graffiti talents from the streets into Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s brand new pop-up space in the heart of Chelsea. Entitled Late Confessions, this series of works are reflective of their unique multi-cultural heritage. Being born in Germany and growing up in Spain, the identical twin brothers reveal different parts of their past in the art that was produced for this exhibition. In addition to experiencing their signature color palette of red, grey and blacks, the twins pushed the boundaries with […]
