Last night in Japan, NANZUKA opened Javier Calleja’s first solo show in Tokyo at their space in Shibuya. Entitled Do Not Touch, the new body of work from the Spanish artist draws from inspirations like his love for manga, the imagery of Magritte, and his time spent working with Yoshitomo Nara. Currently with Galerie Zink in Hamburg (Barlach Halle K), Javier Calleja has a show on view entitled Fake is the future. Including canvases, works on paper and mural paintings from the Spanish artist, the solo features cartoonish portraiture certainly inspired from his time working under the tutelage of Yoshitomo Nara. On August 16th, Javier Calleja will be opening a new show at Galerie Zink in Hamburg entitled Fake is the future. The fresh work from the Spanish artist, who apprenticed with Yoshitomo Nara, evokes a similar aesthetic his own version of cartoonish wide eyed children. Featuring 10 new artworks ranging from canvasses, works on paper, and mural paintings the exhibition promises to be an immersive experience challenging attendees to ask “if the reality we perceive is truthful or otherwise, manipulated and disguised.” Discuss Javier Calleja here.

Earlier this month, Yusto/Giner in Spain opened a solo show from Javier Calleja entitled I hope you don’t mind. Filling the gallery space of his hometown of Malaga, the new body of work features cartoonish portraits of his doe-eyed children mixed in with text like “Hero”, “I Hope You Don’t Mind”, and “Here And Now.” Rounding out the rest of exhibition from the Nara protege is a 3D figure as well as an emphatic “Done” painted on the walls next to one of his works. After successful Asian debut with AishoNanzuka Gallery in Hong Kong earlier this year (covered), Javier Calleja recently teamed up with the Asian art institution APPortfolio to transform one of his paintings into 3D sculpture. We recently got an update from solidARTy.org that they are started another round of charity art auctions on their website. The project launched back in November by auctioning artworks donated by artists, galleries and studios, with 100% of the proceeds going to AreYouSyrious.org organization. So far they have raised over €20,000 for the cause and are now continuing their efforts by offering more original and rare, editioned work by world renowned street, urban and contemporary artists. Genalguacil is a small town in southern Spain which has been involved in supporting and organizing art projects for the last 20 years. Slowly turning the town into an open space museum, the locals recently invited Javier Calleja from nearby Malaga to add his contribution to the collection.
