This Saturday, May 13, Joao Ruas will be opening a solo at Jonathan LeVine Projects in New Jersey entitled Geist. The concept behind the new work, according to the Sao Paulo-based artist, was inspired by The Phenomenology of the Spirit by G. W. F. Hegel, and uses “modern and ancient metaphorical allegories, religious scenes and historical characters to address attempts to change the inexorable universal pendulum of creation and destruction through endless ages. Releases: Joao Ruas – “Verso” Book

Back in 2014, Los Angeles’ Thinkspace Gallery successfully hosted a solo show from Joao Ruas entitled Verso (covered). This month, the Brazilian artist released a 64 page hardcover catalogue from the exhibition including a fold out center of his painting Cannae of You and Me. Releases: Joao Ruas – “The Rites of Spring” Print Set

On March 20th, Joao Ruas will be releasing a print set entitled The Rites of Spring. Inspired by Igor Stravinsky’s masterpiece Le Sacre du Printemps, the limited editions will be available at 8:31AM (PST) the exact moment of the Vernal Equinox on the Northern Hemisphere. If you attended any of the previous Supersonic Invitational shows, you know you’re in for a treat. On November 27th, a group exhibition organized by Henrik Uldalen, the founder of Paintguide on Instagram, will open at Unit London. One can say the Norwegian oil painter’s success has come in part because of social media, something that more and more collectors are using to find and purchase artwork. Over the weekend, Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles opened the doors to The Gilded Age featuring new works by Aaron Horkey, Esao Andrews, and João Ruas. Project M/4 (Berlin) – Part II

We recently brought you a look at artists at work on the Urban Nation’s Project M/4 in Berlin, curated by Thinkspace. Openings: Joao Ruas – “VERSO” @ Thinkspace

Showing through this weekend at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City is VERSO, a new solo show from Joao Ruas. The Brazilian artist presented a diverse set of works including his largest work to date (seen above), a wall mural & installation, etchings, polaroids, backlit pieces, and more utilizing mediums such as acrylic, watercolor, pen, pencil, and gouache.
