Culver City Artwalk ’10: “Picks of the Harvest” @ Thinkspace

On right now at the Culver City Arts District is their annual Artwalk. After bringing you a look at what LeBasse Projects and Carmichael Gallery had to offer, we now turn our eye on another great gallery – Thinkspace. Heading their show is master manipulator of pop culture and satirist, David MacDowell. You can’t help but smile when you see the skill in which David takes familiar elements and remixes them into a clever and unexpected composition – like Golem heading over to “Booger King” […]

Openings: Joao Ruas – “III” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last week, AM had the pleasure of attending the opening of Sao Paulo native Joao Ruas’ show “III” at the recently christened new Thinkspace location. The young artist who replaced James Jean at the helm of the “Fables” franchise was on hand to greet guests who made it out to see his show. Weaving a collection of dreamy imagery, Joao used a diverse mix of oil, acrylic and other mediums while exercising his talents on his mysterious subjects. See the opening night action after the […]

Preview: Joao Ruas “III” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last time we saw Joao Ruas, he was showing beside Allison Sommers (covered) in his first ever US show and it left us wanting more. Now he’s again showing beside Allison (previewed) at Thinkspace Gallery and we’ll be there to cover it when it opens tonight, May 7th. Check out a few preview images after the jump.

Preview: “A Cry For Help” Benefit Show @ Thinkspace

Opening January 8th as one of the first shows of 2010 will be Thinkspace’s “A Cry For Help.”  The group show features a long list of artists who have produced work bringing attention to different endangered animals.  Twenty percent of the proceeds will go to Born Free USA, a national animal advocacy organization that works toward “ending the suffering of wild animals in captivity, rescuing individual animals in need, protecting wildlife including highly endangered species in their natural habitats, and encouraging compassionate conservation globally.” Take […]

Openings: LeBasse Projects “Go East” NYC Pop-Up Show

AM stopped by last week to check out the Culver City based LeBasse Projects and the art that traveled to New York for their “Pop Up” show.  Only in town for less than a week, “Go East” showcased the work of Yoskay Yamamoto (featured and seen above), Tessar Lo, Edwin Ushiro, Joao Ruas, Eric Fortune (interviewed), Mia (interviewed), and Nate Frizzell (featured). Judging from what we saw, we look forward to the next trip east from this group of fresh young artists. More pics after […]

ARTWALK Culver City: Thinkspace Gallery

Last weekend, Culver City hosted their ARTWALK 2009 event with over thirty galleries throughout the area participating. Thinkspace Gallery, located in the Silver Lake district, got in on the action as well, opening a one day pop-up gallery on Washington Blvd. Fans packed the rear gallery area throughout the day to see the live-painting demonstration by Asylm, Anthony Clarkson, Mear One, Michael Alvarez, Michael Pukac, Nathan DeYoung and Zoso. The show itself featured work from Ekundayo, Allison Sommers, ARMSROCK, Brandi Milne, Brian Viveros, Camilla d’Errico, Fafi, […]

Openings: Allison Sommers – “A Brief History” & Joao Ruas – “Inner Myth” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Whoever coined the phrase “beauty is in the details” certainly knew what they were talking about. The two bodies of work currently being shown at Thinkspace Gallery, “A Brief History” by Allison Sommers (interviewed) and Joao Ruas’ “Inner Myth” certainly live up to this age-old saying. AM thoroughly enjoyed Sommers’ whimsical world and the intricately painted creatures that inhabit it and we were equally impressed with Fables cover artist Ruas’ mythology-inspired pieces. Get a detailed look at the work and see the rest of the photos […]

James Jean – Final cover: Fables #81

You know the saying: “All good things must…” Well, after almost 8 fantastic years as the cover artist for the ground breaking comic series Fables, James Jean has finally completed his last cover for Vertigo/DC marking the close of a chapter in his astonishing career as an illustrator. But don’t worry, judging by the tremendous success of his first gallery show “Kinding” at Jonathan Levine last month (here), we’re positive that he’s destined for even bigger things as he starts his career as a “fine […]

Joao Ruas – New Fables Artist

It was announced recently that Brazilian artist Joao Ruas has been pegged to replace James Jean as the new cover artist for the legendary comic book series Fables. In fact, he has already finished two covers (one seen above and one after the jump). We first noticed Ruas at the “Drawing Room” show curated by Audrey Kawasaki and ironically, his work at that time reminded us of Jean. Now that award winning artist Jean is moving on to the gallery circuit, Joao will will have […]

Preview: The Drawing Room @ Thinkspace

Just like how the bridesmaids aren’t suppose to be more beautiful than the bride at a wedding, Audrey Kawasaki appears to be making sure she’s not going to be upstaged at at her own drawing show. Curated by Audrey, “The Drawing Room” (teased) opens this Friday, November 7th at Thinkspace Gallery. She’s submitting around a dozen works on both paper and wood including this amazing die-cut piece seen above. To our knowledge, this is the first time she has used this technique. Judging from the […]
