Auction Results: “Urban Art” @ Bonhams 1/11/11

If today’s Urban Art auction at Bonhams can be seen as an indicator for the overall health of the Urban/Street Art market,  then things are looking absolutely strong, exciting, and prosperous.  Most lots found buyers and all the major pieces in the sale found new owners. The most notable result was Shepard Fairey’s Peace Goddess on maple from the Sea No Evil benefit auction in 2008, which surpassed everyone’s expectations and sold for over double the high estimate, at $43,000.  Among in-the-know Shepard Fairey collectors, […]

Video: JR – “The Wrinkles of the City”

Filmed and edited in his signature style, this The Wrinkles of the City video documents JR’s recent project in Shanghai which included an exhibition (covered) and street work (covered). With the general release of his acclaimed Women Are Heroes documentary set for this week in his home country, although not in the film, this footage should only excite the French street photographer’s fans even more before the worldwide release. Showing: Lazarides’ “Hell’s Half Acre” at the Leake Street Tunnels

One of the most notable stops in our hectic journey through London was Lazarides’ “Hell’s Half Acre” group exhibition. The pop-up show was located in the eerie tunnels of Leake Street (AKA the Old Vic Tunnels where the Cans Festival was held). The dark catacombs were the perfect setting to host this amazing group show that featured signature works from artists such as Ian Francis, David Choe, Conor Harrington, Antony Micallef and Jonathan Yeo. One of the stand out pieces from the show was Paul […]

It looks like JR’s latest project (through Galerie Magda Danysz) is underway in China as he starts his installs for “The Wrinkles of the City”. The street pieces are set to coincide with the Shanghai Biennale and will feature the French photographer’s captured images of the elderly who represent the memory of the city. These photos will be pasted up at locations that he feels speak to the heritage of a city that has definitely has its share of ups and downs – “from the […]

Openings / Streets: FAME Festival 2010

For the last two years, there’s only one place even the most half-hearted of street art fan should be in September and that’s the picturesque town of Grottaglie, in the foot of Italy, and this year is no exception as the town again provides the canvas for curator Angelo Milano’s FAME Festival. As with previous years, Angelo has invited a stylistically and geographically diverse selection of renowned and, at least for now, less recognized artists to decorate the walls of his hometown as they see […]

The project is co-produced by the Musée de l’Elysée and the Festival Images, with photographs taken from the collection of the museum and pasted up in the city of […]
