Streets World Roundup (Dec ’17 – Jan ’18)

It’s been a while since our last Streets World Roundup so it was a little hard to narrow down what to share with you but we did our best. Leading things off up top is a new installation placed briefly on Wallstreet in New York by Icy an Sot. The large wadded-up $1 bill in the Financial District represents greed and volatility of capitalism according to the Iranian art duo. Other worthy walls include work from: Dabs Myla (Australia), Aiko (Vietnam), JR (USA), Dragon76 (USA), Eduardo Kobra […]

Showing: JR – “GIANTS” @ Lazarides

Today in London, Lazinc new flagship gallery in Mayfair opened their doors with an exhibition from JR (interviewed) entitled Giants. The show focuses in on the French artist’s series of large-scale outdoor installations that started back in 2016 for the Rio Olympics (covered). Visitors will be able to view the details of the photographer and street artist’s project (which also made an appearance at the US – Mexico border), including architectural plans, photography, and studies. Rounding out the exhibition is a sweet installation sticking out of the gallery’s […]

Showing: JR – “Mind the Gap” @ Château La Coste

Currently at Château La Coste in France, JR (interviewed) has an exhibition on view featuring a nifty installation that is a play on some of his most well-known works like his Women Are Heroes project in Kenya. Entitled Mind the Gap, the piece in the Renzo Piano Pavilion features a series of hanging circular tracks that have miniature trains running in different directions, all pasted with the French artist’s photographs. The hypnotic motion of the 700 train cars creates a captivating sight for visitors of the exhibition which […]

Rewind: June 9 – Oct 24

It’s been a while since we last shared some art-related videos with you in our Rewind feature so here are some that you may have missed in the last several months. Leading things off are a couple videos documenting the launch of Liu Bolin’s ready-to-wear collection at New York Fashion Week. The fashion collection inspired by the 12 photographs he created in the United States featuring his unique style of painting camouflaging himself into the scenery, something referenced by the body painting the models had […]

Streets: JR Installation @ US-Mexico Border Fence (Part 2)

Coinciding with the last day of his scaffolded installation at the US-Mexico border fence (covered), JR (interviewed) organized a gigantic picnic to commemorate the occasion. Setting up a massive table featuring the “eyes of a dreamer,” a motif the French artist is famous for, the feast spanned both sides of the fence near Tecante, Mexico and Tecate in California. People from both sides showed up, including Kikito (whose photo was the one used for the installation) and his family, to share food and to support the artist’s continued […]

Streets: JR Installation @ US-Mexico Border Fence (Part 1)

Recently in Tecate, at the US-Mexico border fence, JR (interviewed) has installed a provocative new project featuring a Mexican boy peering over the barrier. Best viewed from the US side, the new work towering over 70 feet utilizes the scaffolding technique he introduced at the recent Olympics in Brazil (covered) and deals wth a topic the French photograffeur often touches on – immigrants and refugees. He states – “People will always migrate. When we built walls, people built tunnels. When we closed places, they went by the water. The […]

Streets: JR (Rio de Janeiro) – Part II

After sharing a first look at the public art created in Rio de Janeiro by JR (interviewed) for the Olympics, we now have photos from the rest of the project. Like the first piece featuring a Sudanese athlete high jumping over a building, the other two installations also feature athletes that didn’t make it to this year’s Olympics – French triathlete Léonie Periault swimming and a Brazilian diver. He chose to photograph young athletes who may one day make it, people who are still “working hard for the passion of sport.” […]

Streets: JR (Rio de Janeiro) – Part I

French artist JR (interviewed) recently completed a new installation in Rio de Janeiro utilizing an intriguing new technique lending the work a more three-dimensional feel. The clever new piece is based on a photo of Mohamed YOUNES IDRISS of Sudan (who didn’t qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics) performing a high jump over the top of building with the assistance of some scaffolding.
