French photographer and street artist JR (interviewed) currently has a show at Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden, Germany. The retrospective features shots of his public works as well as the black and-white photographs used for the street installations from a wide range of projects ranging from FACE 2 FACE to THE WRINKLES OF THE CITY to WOMEN ARE HEROES. After creating the NYCB’s 2014 Art Series installation (covered), JR is taking the collaboration with New York City Ballet to a new level as a theatrical director. The versatile French artist came up with the idea of creating something on the stage of NYCB while working on his art installation, and the result of that idea is an eight-minute pièce d’occasion, conceived and directed by him. Last week, AM attended the New York City Ballet (NYCB) to catch the premiere of the next exhibition in their artist series, this time featuring JR. The French “photograffeur” took the opportunity to transform the Lincoln Center with his imagery both inside and out. Utilizing numerous photo sessions with NYCB’s dancers, JR was able to add a new wrinkle to the storied performance troupe’s performances. French “photograffeur” JR (interviewed) recently turned the facade of the National Library of France in Paris into his largest photo printer yet as he brought his Inside Out project back home again. Pasted in strips over the course of a week in November, the striking image and clever use of the building further cements himself as one of his country’s foremost street artists. The work on display includes ACTIONS that the French photographer and street artist has worked on around the world like his Wrinkles of the City in Berlin earlier this year, his journey to North Korea, and his 2005 Portrait of a Generation project.
