Streets / Upcoming: JR – “The Wrinkles of the City” @ Galerie Henrik Springmann (Berlin)

French street artist and photographer JR is in Berlin this week, working on a new project that will span over 15 different buildings within the city limits. In conjunction with his Wrinkles of the City project, his new work will include portraits of elderly individuals who have, over time, witnessed and experienced the upheaval and transformation of the city of Berlin. One of the first pieces already completed shows a hand making a “West Side” symbol on a busy intersection in East Berlin. On April 17th […]

Releases: New JR App and Digital Book

French photographer  JR recently released a new app (completely free) for the iPad detailing his many projects. Features include many photos and videos based on a map as well as exclusive interactive functions that give you a closer look at the street artist’s work. As an added bonus for those interested, JR’s first book, The Wrinkles of The City, Los Angeles can be purchased as well. Discuss JR here.

JR x Bagua Footwear

Perhaps inspired by the shoes Os Gemeos were wearing for their opening in Los Angeles last year, friend and fellow street artist JR has produced some of his own footwear. Shoemakers Bagua recently teamed with the French photographer to create a pair of shoes based on his iconic eye as you can see above. Unfortunately at this time, they have only been made available to friends and family of the two collaborators. Via Hypebeast. Discuss JR here.

Streets: JR (New York)

Last week, JR spent part of his birthday doing what he loves best – getting up on the streets. For this unique little “inception” worthy project within a project, it looks like the French street photograffeur enlisted his friends Os Gemeos to pose for a photo on the back of a truck which then was pasted back onto said truck (seen below). On a related note, also check out the sweet gift he got from the twins here. Discuss JR here.

Openings: JR @ Watarium Museum (Tokyo)

We recently gave you a sneak peek at French “photograffeur” JR as he worked feverishly to set up his first solo museum exhibition at Tokyo’s Watari Musuem of Contemporary Art. This past weekend, the show opened to a enthusiastic reception by the people in Japan. Highlighting his Inside Out project, which incorporated the residents from North East Japan (where the tsunami hit in March 2011), JR went big as he always does and wheat-pasted the exterior facade of the museum. On the inside, we saw a diverse […]

Videos / Releases: JR – “Action in Kesennuma, Japan” Lithograph

Back in November, French photograffeur JR headed to Japan and toured the disaster area, furthering his Inside Out project in the area – dedicated to the victims of the tsunami.  If you remember, one of the most poignant images from that trip was the pasting of the eyes of a local fisherman on a boat that was stranded and abandoned as the water receded. This piece has now been recreated as a 12 color lithograph (released here) along with a video documenting the creation process at the […]

Preview / Setup: JR @ Watarium Museum (Tokyo)

If you remember, late last year, we shared with you some photos of JR touring Japan to spread his Inside Out love in his giant photo booth / converted truck. Turns out, that was only a precursor for a show opening officially this weekend at the Watarium Museum in Tokyo. As you can see from these preview images, the French “photograffeur” is already busy prepping the outside and inside of the institution with his distinctive work. Photos via Alabaz and the artist. Openings: “Ephemeral” @ Circleculture

Currently showing in Berlin is Ephemeral, a group exhibition (curated by Johann Haehling von Lanzenauer) held at a temporary space by Circleculture in collaboration with Pret A Diner in Berlin (you may remember their work with Lazarides in 2011). Playing on the theme of the ephemeral nature of life, 14 international artists contributed work for the show including Jaybo, Shepard Fairey, Katrin Fridriks, Kevin Earl Taylor, Stohead, André Saraiva, JR, XOOOOX, Aaron Rose, Lennart Grau, Olivia Steele, Marco Grassi aka Pho, Stefan Strumbel, and Jonathan Yeo. Head over here if you […]

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Streets: JR x André

Continuing our survey of the streets in Miami, another interesting wall was collaboratively worked on by JR (featured) and André. The two French street artists combined their two styles – the signature photographic eye from JR and the stick figures of André – into a welcome addition to the Design District. JR was in town also for his book release with Jose Parla at The Standard and Mr. A was in town for his Love Graffiti project. Discuss Basel Week Miami here. Discuss JR here.

Streets: JR (Japan)

After working on a particularly poignant mural in Washingon DC, JR has headed to the Far East to spread his Inside Out love. Going mobile with his giant photo booth in a converted truck, the French photograffeur has been traveling though Japan with his crew and local volunteers, focusing especially in areas hit by the devastating tsunami which still have not completely recovered over on year out. More photos below… Photos via the artist. Discuss JR here.
