Openings: “Death and the Maiden 2” & Femke Hiemstra – “The Sand Castle Battle and Other Tales” @ Roq la Rue

Well folks, this is it. The swan song as the sun sets on Roq la Rue, one of the most influential galleries of low brow turned pop surrealism and new contemporary the scene has ever seen. Owner Kirsten Anderson has decided that after eighteen years, it’s time to begin a new adventure in the name of the nameless, starting a non-profit to aid in the protection of animals that are illegally hunted and poached. Her philanthropy has spilled into several animal benefit shows over the […]

Even though Baby Tattooville founder Bob Self explained that his vision for the gift bags is that they are “souvenirs of a remarkable weekend,” any visitors would say they are much more than that. They are a bounty of remarkable art, including 3 foot by 4 foot signed giclee print of the Art Jam painting, original pieces from Joe Sorren, Jeff Soto, Eric Fortune, Miss Mindy and Brian Smith. In total, there are more than twenty items including limited edition prints, vinyl figures, books, original […]

Baby Tattooville ’14: Art Jam!

Bringing together 14 accomplished and sought after artists in the lowbrow art world is not easily done, and a feat worth noting all on its own. But having those artists collaborate on a single piece of art, creating it in a day and a half, then have prints signed and distributed all within a weekend is nothing short of miraculous. AM was on hand to catch the entire process, from the blank canvas to the last ten minutes when the piece was laid flat to allow […]

Baby Tattoville ’14: “Through The Looking Glass” @ Riverside Art Museum

Every year the city of Riverside, California plays host to Baby Tattooville, it is one of the highlights for the town and an unmistakable part of the personality of the event. The separation from Los Angeles and its art scene is part of what make the event so unique. The attendees are taken out of their environment and plunged into a Baby Tattoo world, populated by lowbrow artists, their creations and the people who love them. Each year, the Riverside Art Museum puts on an […]

Baby Tatooville ’14: Things Start to Get Intimate at the Artist Panel

Perhaps the most notable thing about Baby Tattooville is how personal it is. Unlike any other event on earth, attendees are invited to spend time with the artists, watch them create and in general everyone gets to know each other. What better way to get things going then to have the event organizer Bob Self introduce each artist, have them each say a little about themselves, their experiences with the event and what they plan on doing for this year’s event. Official participants this year include Brom, Laurie Lee Brom, […]

Baby Tattooville ’14: The Madness Begins!

Below are pictures of some of the guests, as well as some of the artists like Brom, Laurie Lee Brom, Brandi Milne and Jeff Soto checking in for the event. The art retreat runs all weekend […]
