Upcoming: Scott Listfield – “Franchise” @ Gallery 1988

This Friday night, June 16th, Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles will be opening a new show from Scott Listfield entitled Franchise. As the titled suggests, the American artist will be taking aim at some of the familiar chains in the food industry that we all take a guilty pleasure in partaking. As usual, his trusty astronaut will be the main character as we revisit some of these fast food icons in a possible dystopian future. Listfield explains – “Do you know anyone who lands at LAX […]

The new body of imaginative work features paintings (including the massive 6′ x 9′ piece seen above), drawings, as well as a few limited editions. Previews: Kisung Koh – “Long Live the Polar Treasure” @ Thinkspace

This Saturday night (June 3rd), Thinkspace’s project room will play host to Kisung Koh’s first solo exhibition with the Culver City gallery. The Toronto-based painter is another young artist whose imagery touches on environmental issues as is evident with his choice of subject matter for this showing. Entitled Long Live the Polar Treasure, the new collection of oil paintings from Koh is entirely dedicated to the endangered polar bear and the displacement from its habitat, paralleling the Korean artist’s own life experiences of “deracination and the pangs of dislocated belonging.”

Murals: The Draculas @ ETA Agency

We first got turned on to the work of The Draculas during this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii where they painted an amazing and surreal campfire scene. The Southern California-based duo, comprised of Gary Musgrave and Jeff McMillan, recently painted mural for the ETA Agency in Long Beach featuring a seaside city rampage kaiju battle. Take a look at more photos below… Photo credit: Brandon Shigeta.

Faile Ceramic Tile House Installation (Venice)

Recently in Venice, California, Faile (featured) completed an tile installation that wrapped around the facade of one of the housesoff a side street of Abbot Kinney (741 California Avenue). If you recall, the Brooklyn-based duo have worked with tiles before in some of their installations like the Faile Temple (covered). This new 16,000 piece from the two features twelve different motifs in a striking patchwork-like composition that captures cultural history of the area including imagery like a skateboard wheel & nut, Golden State Poppy, Venice Beach basketball court, […]

Showing: Mike Lee – “Rebound” @ Giant Robot

From April 29th until May 18th, Giant Robot 2 welcomes back Mike Lee with another show of his unmistakable oils on paper, mylar and canvas. Rebound continues the body of work from his previous solo with the Los Angeles-based gallery, Repose, and is in particular focused on love. Using the softness of oil as a major feature, his monochromatic images feature faceless and featureless characters in various settings. For this particular exhibition, Lee focused on feelings of ambiguity, reliance, longing, and hope, as a reaction to his personal experiences in the past […]

Recently in Culver City, California, Kenny Scharf (interviewed) was able to paint some of his signature characters on the sides of a building overlaid over a colorful background of drips. It looks like while there, he also took time to continue his series of what he calls Karbombz where he paints the outside of a lucky fan’s automobile. Take a look at more photos as well as a video below… Photo and video credit: Birdman Photos. Discuss Kenny Scharf here.
