Streets: Meggs (Los Angeles)

Recently in Los Angeles, Meggs teamed up with mobile game company Com2uS to paint an expansive mural promoting new and original content surrounding Summoners War. The new piece covering 2000 square feet of wall in Downtown LA (568 South Sante Fe Ave) features well known characters from the game such as Arch Angel, Dragon, and Angelmon rendered in the Melbourne-based artist’s signature aesthetic. One of the major exhibitions of 2015 will be opening next month at the LA Municipal Art Gallery featuring the work of Robert Williams. Debuting a new body of work in Los Angeles for the first time in ages, the man many consider the godfather of the low brow and pop surrealist art movements will be presenting paintings, drawings, and sculptures collectively entitled Slang Aesthetics! The show will be presented and curated by Thinkspace and Copro Gallery alongside 20 Years Under The Influence of Juxtapoz, a magazine Williams founded 90s. For […]

On January 10th, Gallery 1988 (East) will be opening a solo show from Nicole Gustafsson featuring over 25 original paintings (and a few prints) illustrating some of her favorite video games, tv shows, and films of mostly the 80s and 90s. Entitled Pop Terrariums, the new body of work from the Pacific Northwest based artist will combine her love for those little enclosed worlds in a glass containers with her love for pop culture. Showing: Soey Milk – “SINAVRO” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Currently on view at Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City is a solo show from Soey Milk entitled SINAVRO, which is a pure Korean word translated loosely to mean “to progress slowly, almost imperceptibly.” Those who have followed evolution of the young Los Angeles-based artist’s work certainly have seen a move toward richer backgrounds and more intricate detailing in her feminine portraiture. Head over before January 10th if you want to check out her new paintings and drawings as well as a few purely abstract pieces that seem […]

Recap: Kevin Peterson – “Remnants” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Yesterday, we stopped by on the last day of the soldout Kevin Peterson show at Thinkspace Gallery to check out his new paintings. Collectively entitled Remnants, the fresh collection of works feature the Houston-based artist’s children and animal portraiture in urban settings. Utilizing these unlikely subjects with such stark backgrounds often featuring graffiti, abandoned structures, and overgrowth provides a contrast that is recognizable in all of his work. Some of the pieces had three-dimensional elements included (like metal grills) that fit in seamlessly into the […]

Upcoming: KMNDZ – “I’d Rather Love You” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

After showing with Merry Karnowsky in 2012 (covered), Johnny Rodriguez (aka KMNDZ) will be back on February 7th with another solo show. I’d Rather Love You will feature imagery that we have come to love from the Los Angeles-based artist featuring an interplay of intricately detailed birds, bombs, flowers, jewels, numerology and other paraphernalia rendered in a rust-colored palette. In the works is also a massive 8 feet painting that will serve as the centerpiece of the exhibition. Discuss KMNDZ here.

Upcoming: “La Familia – 10 Years of Thinkspace”

Coming up on January 10th, Thinkspace in Los Angeles will be celebrating their 10 year anniversary with La Familia, a group exhibition featuring over 100 participants. Each artist will be creating a 10″ x 10″ piece on panel (provided by Trekell) like what Scott Listfield painted above – an intriguing post-apocalyptic look at the Culver City gallery where only their EINE painted roll down door survived. Other artists include Aaron Horkey, Aaron Nagel, Adam Caldwell, Alex Yanes, Alexis Diaz, Allison Sommers, Amanda Marie, Amy Sol, Ana […]
