Previews: Shepard Fairey – “50 Shades Of Black” @ Subliminal Projects

Tonight in Los Angeles, Shepard Fairey (featured) will be opening a new show entitled 50 Shades Of Black at Subliminal Projects. The exhibition is centered around the third installment (also see 2011 & 2012) of new album cover artwork, a series of works that Shep is know for, inspired by the 12-inch record cover format. Along with original hand painted multiples, there will also be a box set of screen prints available each containing the 50 new designs. Openings: Jeremy Fish – “Hunting Trophies” @ Mark Moore Gallery

Last night, Hunting Trophies opened at the Mark Moore Gallery, Jeremy Fish’s (featured) second solo with the Culver City space. Continue using custom shapes as his painting surface as well as elaborate frames with carvings, the pieces have a finished look about them and with the impeccable linework, appear almost produced in a factory. Openings: STASH – “Sprayed In Full” @ The Seventh Letter

Last weekend, we had the opportunity to attend the opening of a show from New York graffiti legend STASH (featured). Entitled Sprayed In Full and held at The Seventh Letter gallery in Los Angeles, the exhibition featured a series of works on canvas and paper featuring the same abstract splatter, inspired by elements of graffiti that have made him a wanted man for collaborations with streetwear and fashion companies (as evidenced by a new shoe design from Reebok – also one of the sponsors of the show). Previews: Mark Whalen – “Stranded” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

On April 5th, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery will be opening a show from Mark Whalen (as well as from Julian Meagher). Entitled Stranded, the new body of work from Whalen will include surreal paintings, his catalog of human activity – “playing, fighting, experimenting, creating, cultivating, dreaming, and destroying” – this time within confined interior spaces. Openings: Dennis Morris – “Bob Marley: Giant” @ Known Gallery

Over the weekend, the Known Gallery in Los Angeles hosted the opening for an exhibition from Dennis Morris, a UK-based photographer especially known for his work in the music industry. This particular showing focuses on his iconic shots of Bob Marley, a seminal period of time in his young career when he toured with the Jamaican singer-songwriter. Openings: Fuco Ueda – “Kioku No Hana (Flower Of Memory)” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Over the weekend, Los Angeles saw the opening of a solo show from Fuco Ueda at the Thinkspace Gallery entitled Kioku No Hana or Flower Of Memory. The Japanese artist made a trip over herself for a rare in-person appearance to the delight of her fans. The new body of work features the vibrant palette, familiar female characters, and surreal imagery that Ueda is known for as well as more renderings of the chrysanthemum flowers that often appear in her paintings. Upcoming: Yoskay Yamamoto @ Giant Robot 2

Coming up on May 17th, Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles will host a new showing from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed). From this teaser image, some of the flowers customized with his signature facial features that we have seen here and there will be presented in abundant quantities. Taking inspiration from his job during college was delivering bouquets of flowers in Santa Barbara, the whimsical pieces will be part of no doubt a larger selection of his further explorations into sculpture. Vivian Maier Documentary Opens in Los Angeles

Friday and Saturday night (March 28th & 29th), the LANDMARK in Los Angeles will be hosting the opening of Finding Vivian Maier. The documentary detailing the intriguing story of the discovery of the gifted photographer’s talent and work only after her death may be of interest to those who attended shows of her photos in 2013 & 2012 at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery.
