Recap: Augustine Kofie – “MKNZM” @ Swinton Gallery

Last month, Swinton Gallery in Madrid hosted a show from Augustine Kofie (featured) entitled MKNZM (Mechanism). For his first solo exhibition in Spain, the American artist presented a new body of work including  collage on wood, painting on canvas, and etched found clipboards featuring his signature structured yet free-flowing aesthetic. This time around, Kofie centered his work on the oblong shape, using them like belts to link parts of a conceptual machine while working with textures and gradients of a particular palette. Streets: Escif (Madrid)

Spanish artist Escif recently completely a mural in Madrid with an interesting concept and backstory. He wanted to paint something outside of the residential building that showed what was actually inside the building inspired by the familiar phrase “we are what we eat.” The result was a piece that mimicked the wall paper inside as well as portrayed some of the people that lived there. Openings: Phil Frost – “Intuitive Mathematics” @ Galeria Javier Lopez

Last week, fans of Phil Frost in Madrid saw the opening of Intuitive Mathematics, a solo showing at Galeria Javier Lopez and his first in Spain. Seen were large scale works as well as found objects that were painted over with his recognizable aesthetic, something he calls “intuitive perceptive portraiture.” Layers upon layers of typographical and geometric shapes flow in repeating patterns that he honed to perfection over time with mark-making on the streets.
