Streets: RVA Street Art Festival (Part II)

Last week, Jeff Soto (interviewed) sent over some in-progress photos from the RVA Street Art Festival in Richmond, Virginia where artists like Dalek, Mark Jenkins, Pose, Richard Colman, and others were painting murals along the James River Power Plant Building and Floodwall. Jeff has now followed up those pics with some of of the completed walls including areas where artist’s work leaked into each other’s field leading to some sweet collaborative work. Last week, we shared some photos of Olek as she returned to her hometown for the Katowice Street Art Festival where she yarnbombed excavators. She wasn’t the only street artist to hit up the Polish city because a steady stream of urban beautifiers have put up work of their own including Mark Jenkins (interviewed) with a attention grabbing tug-of-war installation and Escif with a huge on-off switch. As you have seen from our coverage, Richmond, Virginia just had a stellar cast of artists roll by for the G40 Art Summit. To follow that up, this weekend sees more murals in town for the RVA Street Art Festival with another sweet lineup of artists. After Mark Jenkins (interviewed) opens his show in Rome and wraps up his street interventions there, he will be needed to help judge the Scotch Off the Roll Tape Sculpture Contest for 2012 just like he did in 2010. As you saw in our first teaser article, Mark Jenkins (interviewed) has been busy in Rome working the streets and preparing for his show at Wunderkammern opening this Saturday night, March 17th. This exhibition, Living Layers, will no doubt feature much of the work that has been popping up around the Italian city and leaves us excited to see what the opening holds. Last week in Berlin, Gestalten hosted installation artist Mark Jenkins’ (interviewed) first solo show in Germany, Glazed Paradise. The American artist staged his startlingly lifelike sculptural works throughout the space to the delight of showgoers as they bravely roamed the gallery area. Also rounding out the night were limited edition offerings of his famous tape sculptures, photographs of his street work, as well as a lecture presentation from Jenkins. Washington DC-based artist Mark Jenkins, whose work we enjoyed back in March at the VOLTA fair during Armory Week, recently got involved with the Beck’s Green Box Project, an interesting application of new technology in the streets. Last week, Post No Bills held their third exhibition thus far entitled Reality Bites. The show centered around the work of various artists including Borf, Brett Amory, Sage Vaughn, Kelsey Brookes, Mark Jenkins, Morley, and Ravi Zupa who supplied new limited edition prints as well as hand finished multiples.
