Basel Week Miami ’19 / Recap: Art Basel

Earlier this week, the 18th edition of Art Basel Miami opened at the Miami Beach Convention Center with 269 galleries, offering artwork by mostly blue chip artists from around the world. Drawing visitors in for the beautiful (albeit chillier than usual this year) weather and gathering of friends and associates, an almost unending selection of paintings, sculptures, installations, photography, film, video, and digital art greeted their eyes (and wallets) as they perused the main fair. Currently showing at Monnaie de Paris, Not Afraid of Love is Maurizio Cattelan’s largest exhibition since his retrospective in New York five years ago (covered). The controversial artist’s largest ever showing in Europe will also be one of his most personal with the works chosen by himself that he considers most life-important and significant. The always provocative contemporary artist Maurizio Cattelan is once again stirring up controversy, this time in relation to his current showing at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw. In addition to sculptural works for the museum, he has also placed a statue of Adolf Hitler praying on his knees in a former Jewish Ghetto where many Jews were killed or sent to their deaths by Hitler’s regime during the holocaust. What up INTERNET!? Last week your boy… Hennessy Youngman presented a fresh show at Maurizio Cattelan’s Family Business Gallery. Initially invited by Marilyn Minter for an exhibition, Youngman decided to open up this opportunity to all the local artists to submit their artwork.
