Rewind: Sept 10 – Sept 16

This week’s video Rewind has a mini-documentary (source) on Gary Baseman (featured) produced by Eric Minh Swenson at the very top of the list. The in-depth interview reveals his thoughts behind his character Toby and his travels, his love for masks, how his sketchbooks document his travels, creating his own holiday, various characters he has created, the mythology behind his imagery, his personal history, and more. The footage also gives you an extensive look at his studio. Look for a major retrospective from Gary at the Skirball next […]

Rewind: Aug 13 – 19

This week’s video Rewind looks further into the world of Allison Schulnik as Beautiful/Decay and Visual Creatures pay a visit to the talented sculptor, painter, and animator’s studio. Schulnik, whose animation Mound we featured last December, talks about living and working in Los Angeles, how the different aspects of her work inform each other, the sad and fantastical creatures that fill her artistic vision, and more. Other videos worth watching include: Jack and Dinos Chapman’s installation in Grundy Art Gallery’s Adventureland Golf exhibition features Hitler. Artnet […]

Streets: World Roundup (July 23 – July 29)

This week’s roundup sees the return of David Ellis to the streets after the massive mural painted in Brooklyn last month. This latest tree piece was commissioned by Converse as part of they Wall to Wall campaign and features Ellis’ sinuous pattern (photo by Justin Carlson and courtesy of Joshua Liner Gallery). The location is on 23rd Street and 12th Ave in Chelsea, just a short walk from the Joshua Liner Gallery which recently curated a show with Ellis and Kris Kuksi in Los Angeles.  Other notable work this week […]

Teaser: FAME Festival 2012

Good news for street art fans out there. One of our favorite events (see coverage for 2011, 2010, and 2009), FAME Festival, is happening again this year and the list again looks very interesting. Included currently are Ericailcane, Boris Hoppek, Conor Harrington, 108, Lucy McLauchlan, Moneyless, Nug, Giorgio di Palma, Akay, Brad Downey, Cyop & Kaf, Vhils, Paper Resistance, Dem, JR, and Momo. This will be a five year anniversary celebration so expect surprises like more music to be involved this year in the programming. […]

First up for this week’s Rewind feature is this video showing Evan Roth’s novel use of spray cans from his Propulsion Painting series (via today and tomorrow). These creations were featured in his recently opened Welcome to Detroit showing at Eastern Michigan University. You can see more footage of the work here if you are interested. Other notable videos include: Stussy visiting David Shrigley’s studio in Glasgow to discuss his artwork. Trailer for Victor Reyes show at Known Gallery. Footage of Piet Dieleman & MOMO collaboration for […]

Open Walls Baltimore

A new project coordinated by Gaia in his home city has kicked off recently with this mural from the young street artist. Open Walls Baltimore is a public art initiative in a neighborhood burdened by 150 vacant homes and hopes to bridge the gaps between the artist community that calls Station North home and the residents of Greenmount West. A line up of Interesni Kazki, Maya Hayuk, Swoon, Specter, Doodles, Jaz, Ever, Freddy Sam, Mata Ruda, Nanook, MOMO, Vhils, Sten and Lex, Chris Stain, Jetsonorama, […]

Frieze Art Fair 2011: Highlights (Part II)

Following our earlier coverage of London’s Frieze Art Fair, AM made a return visit before it closed last weekend to spend a few more hours considering the curation and presentation of exhibitor booths along with the individual works on display. See more commentary and additional photos of what caught our eye after the jump. By way of advance notice, in more traditional working environments, a couple of images (especially in the gallery section) would probably be deemed NSFW. So don’t blame us if a colleague […]

Streets: Brad Downey in Lisbon (Crono Project)

Berlin-based American artist, Brad Downey, has been keeping himself rather busy lately. His first show in the Middle East, We Are Beginning: Personal Projects in Public Spaces, opened this week at Cuadro Fine Art Gallery in Dubai. In addition, Downey’s work features in the group show What Is Contemporary Art? which opened Friday at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde, Denmark. Later in March, he’s taking part in the group exhibition Wilde Zeichen at the Kunsthalle Krems museum in Krems, Austria. In a post […]

Streets: MOMO in London

Following a brief stint alongside Brad Downey and Vhils in Lisbon, Portugal as part of the ongoing and impressive Crono project (featured here and here), MOMO arranged a short stay in the UK before heading back earlier this week to his latest base in security-challenged New Orleans. For want of a more appropriate euphemism, it was an interesting few days at the AM London residence. The artist’s arrival overlapped with a visit by Christian Coinbergh’s “Gang of Three” from Stockholm – the latter in town […]

Installation: MOMO “Better Than 2009″ @ Anno Domini

Here’s an exhibition we’ve been looking forward to… Conceptually astute graffiti and street artist MOMO was in residence for a week working on his installation at San Jose’s Anno Domini.  AM brings you a behind the scenes glimpse of what’s on offer for his first US solo show, playfully entitled “Better Than 2009”, which opened Friday October 1. What we love about MOMO is the daring use of color and space within his work. If you didn’t read this recent article in the New York Times […]
