NuArt ’15 / Streets: Ella & Pitr – “Lilith & Olaf”

One of the highlights of this year’s NuArt Festival is the completion of what is billed as the world’s largest outdoor mural in Klepp, just outside of Stavanger. Created by French artists Ella & Pitr along with a crew of some 30 volunteers, the 21,000 square meter mural was completed before the festival officially started. Painted on a rooftop of the Block Berge Bygg building, this project was the first in a three-year relationship between the festival and the company. It was slated to take two […]

Streets: Banksy – “Better Out Than In” (New York) – Day 8 & 9

After a great first week in New York City where Banksy hit seven different locations over seven days (covered here), he starts off the week on Monday with a philosphical reference piece (Day 8). Then yesterday, we woke to find that the elusive Bristol-based artist had brought out the big guns – literally. For Day 9 of Better Out Than In, Mr. B gets a little more clever with an installation inside an empty lot in the Lower East Side near the corner of Ludlow & Stanton. Banksy sets […]

Openings: José Parlá – “Diary of Brooklyn” @ Barclays Center

Just short of two weeks ago, José Parlá announced he was working on a mural titled Diary of Brooklyn, commissioned by Brooklyn’s newest arena-style concert venue and home to the Brooklyn Nets, The Barclay’s Center. This gigantic piece is the largest to date from break-out urban landscape artist José Parlá, measuring a whopping 10 x 70 feet. The mural utilizes a selection of materials including oil and acrylics, plaster and enamel on wood.  Without question, 2013 is looking to be the year of Parlá. When asked about the mural by the […]

Kenny Scharf Mural on Houston & Bowery Completed

Completed just in time for the city’s art lovers to view before they embark for Miami, Kenny Scharf’s mural is up on the wall where his close friend and collaborator Keith Haring famously had his.  Once a space where Deitch Projects artists shared their art with the public, it is now curated by Kathy Grayson of The Hole (where Scharf is currently exhibiting).  The piece features the artist’s crowded colorful cast of characters all squeezed in tight.  See it before you take off for Basel, […]

Streets: Mac & Retna Mural (In Progress) @ Culver City

Those who came out for the Culver City Artwalk and ventured south of Washington on La Cienega encountered a very special treat. Two legends in graffiti, El Mac and Retna, were collaboratively painting a huge mural sponsored by Rivera & Rivera.  The team, who have blessed walls from coast to coast–including many beautiful ones in Los Angeles already–worked into the night, unloading aerosol can after aerosol can on this piece.  Word is that they had two days left on this one, but as you can […]
