A couple nights ago, AM was able to stop by the Whitney Museum in New York to attend the opening of the Yayoi Kusama solo exhibition. The traveling retrospective, which was recently shown at the Tate Modern in London (covered), features a diverse selection of her work from the 1940s through the present including traditional Japanese paintings, her canvases utilizing repeating motifs of dots and nets, furniture bristling with soft-sculpture phalluses, her polka-dot-painted pumpkins, whole room light installations, and more. This Saturday, July 14th, the Yokohama Museum of Art will be opening Yoshitomo Nara’s newest show a bit like you and me…, 11 years since the Japanese artist’s last solo there in 2001. The title of the exhibition is taken from a song by the Beatles, Nowhereman, expressing the relationship between the artist and his works and between his works and the viewer, as mentioned in the artist statement. This past weekend, MOCA presented Rebel, an exhibition conceived by James Franco and also including Douglas Gordon, Harmony Korine, Damon McCarthy, Paul McCarthy, Terry Richardson, Ed Ruscha, and Aaron Young. AM was fortunate enough to be able to trek down recently to Washington D.C. and catch Tomokazu Matsuyama’s (interviewed) solo exhibition at the Katzen Arts Center at the American University Museum. Aptly titled Thousand Regards, Matsu presented a balanced mix of works that varied from sculptures, paintings to installations to greet the guests visiting the museum. AM recently had the chance to stop by The Brooklyn Academy of Music’s (BAM) annual silent auction to take a look at the artwork up for bid. This being their 150th anniversary, BAM got a gaggle of great artwork donated by some impressive artists working in the greater New York area such as Nate Lowman, Carmen Herrera, Tauba Auerbach, KAWS, Ryan McGinness, Jacob Kassay, Terrance Koh and many more. Currently at the Nevada Museum of Art, Gregory Euclide has a collection of works on display collectively entitled Nature Out There. Reminiscent of another artist regularly covered here on AM, Adam Neate (interviewed), Euclide has progressed his work to where there is an added dimensionality to the paintings he creates. Blending natural and found materials with his rendered scraps, the Minnesota-based artist creates encapsulated worlds where “pristine notions of landscape meet the reality of our current environment.” More photos after the jump…
