Videos: Eli Broad on 60 Minutes

We only caught of glimpse of noted “venture philanthropist” Eli Broad at the Art in the Streets opening a couple weeks ago, but apparently Morley Safer was able to spend more time time with him for the latest segment of 60 Minutes. The engaging interview touched on many topics including the self-made billionaire’s charitable goals and philosphies, his art collection, and the love-hate relationship the art community has with him.

Focus: Los Angeles – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

As you’ve seen Art in the Streets brings many of your AM favorites to the MOCA, but another important aspect of the exhibition is the recognition of the roots of the street art movement with both coasts were showcased from past to present. In a special wing of the museum, Los Angeles held it down with representatives from all aspects of the west coast. From photography and graffiti to tattooing and fine art, we experienced a lesson in cholo and local urban artistry. With a […]

Video: Swoon Installation @ MOCA

We only recently brought you a in-depth look at the amazing installation Swoon (interviewed) created for the Art in the Streets exhibition.  Well, a new video (directed by Cat Solen) from the Levi’s Film Workshop has been released showing the behind-the-scenes preparations of that complex illuminated piece and not surprisingly, the delicate work required looked quite arduous and time-consuming.  Well worth the effort don’t you think? Via Show & Tell Gallery. Discuss this show here. Discuss Swoon here.

Focus: Swoon – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

One of the surprises for AM while visiting the Art in the Streets exhibition was pulling aside the curtain and stepping inside the Swoon (interviewed) installation. The huge tent-like illuminated paper and cloth construct invited viewers to explore all 360 degrees of glorious detail. We found ourselves returning again and again to take in the novel new imagery from the Brooklyn-based artist and you should as well. More detailed shots after the jump..

Focus: Shepard Fairey – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

Another street artist featured in MOCA’s Art in the Streets show was none other than Shepard Fairey (featured). Again teaming up with Jeffery Deitch (Shep was the final exhibition at Deitch Projects), the prolific artist created a tightly focused room that revealed new canvases based off of previously “beautified” locations. Of course, there were also the classic stencils that spanned back to his early days. And if you had a chance to visit the gift shop you would have see an awesome mural (previewed) he […]

Artist Talk: Kehinde Wiley @ LACMA

AM recently attended a great artist talk by figurative painter Kehinde Wiley held at the LACMA. The packed event included the discussions of his works included in the exhibition Human Nature: Contemporary Art from the Collection along with the process and imagery that Mr. Wiley choose while preparing for the show. The stimulating talk was followed by a book signing where Kehinde happily greeted each of his fans and introduced his new 64 page catalog for his current show (covered) at Roberts & Tilton (available here). […]

Focus: Banksy – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

The most speculated upon artist of Art in the Streets was none other than the mysterious and supremely talented Banksy. Not “officially” announced on the initial roster of artists involved in the MOCA exhibition, rumors buzzed in art land that the acclaimed director of the Oscar nominated Exit Through The Gift Shop would be the “special guest” appearing in the exhibition. Banksy didn’t disappoint as he brought the “heavy weaponry” back to the city that held his Barely Legal show in 2006. Banksy brought many […]

Focus: Osgemeos – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

From our first look at the epic “Art in the Streets” exhibition yesterday, you should have gotten the idea of how complex and expansive the setup really was. We now have time to bring you some in depth looks at some of the juiciest parts of the show starting with a look at the Brazilian twins Osgemeos. Take a look some detailed pics after the jump of the corridor of the MOCA that they transformed with their signature speakers, colorful paintings, and a crazy install […]

Openings: “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA (First Look)

This morning, the Los Angeles MOCA lifted the veil of secrecy on its highly anticipated “Art in the Streets” exhibition.  This first major U.S. museum survey of graffiti and street art is the brainchild of Jeffrey Deitch (along with associate co-curators Roger Gastman & Aaron Rose) and was certainly one of the first enticing possibilities that came to AM’s mind when we first heard of his unconventional hiring as MOCA’s director early last year. Despite the inevitable quibbling about who was and who wasn’t included […]
